Adolescents' real-time social and affective experiences of online and face-to-face interactions

Robin Achterhof et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of digital communication on adolescent wellbeing through momentary affective experiences during online and face-to-face social interactions. Results show that adolescents experience less positive affect when alone compared to online interaction, but more positive affect and less negative affect and loneliness when interacting face-to-face. Exploratory analysis did not find a support for the hypothesis that individuals with more social support benefit more from online interaction.

Daily-Life Social Experiences as a Potential Mediator of the Relationship Between Parenting and Psychopathology in Adolescence

Robin Achterhof et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a vulnerable period for psychopathology development, and certain parenting styles are consistent predictors of mental health outcomes. This study aims to identify the associations between parenting styles, daily-life social interactions, and psychopathology in adolescents. The findings suggest that maladaptive parenting styles can impact adolescents' daily social interactions and potentially contribute to the development of psychopathology symptoms.

Selection of the Number of Participants in Intensive Longitudinal Studies: A User-Friendly Shiny App and Tutorial for Performing Power Analysis in Multilevel Regression Models That Account for Temporal Dependencies

Ginette Lafit et al.

Summary: In recent years, procedures for collecting intensive longitudinal data, such as the experience-sampling method, have become increasingly popular, allowing researchers to study dynamic psychological functioning and individual differences. Determining the number of participants needed for testing specific hypotheses with sufficient power in intensive longitudinal studies can be challenging due to the hierarchical data structure and serial dependence. This study presents a user-friendly application for conducting simulation-based power analyses, focusing on popular models in intensive longitudinal research that explicitly account for temporal dependencies.

Social Media Use and Friendship Closeness in Adolescents' Daily Lives: An Experience Sampling Study

J. Loes Pouwels et al.

Summary: The study found differing effects of social media use on friendship closeness among individuals, with general WhatsApp and Instagram use showing positive associations with friendship closeness overall. However, individual-specific effects may vary, indicating the importance of considering individual differences in developmental and media effect theories.
