(Mis)representing climate mobilities: lessons from documentary filmmaking

Summary: Climate migration discourses often misrepresent the realities and experiences of those affected by climate change, portraying migration as a threat to western societies. However, empirical research in climate mobilities scholarship shows that climate change affects people's mobilities in varied and complex ways. Despite these findings, simplistic climate migration narratives still prevail. To address this, the author analyzes six documentary films that depict island and coastal communities facing the possibility of migration. The study highlights the importance of considering not just the mobilities of those being represented, but also of the filmmakers and the representation itself in the filmmaking process. Overall, the author argues that climate mobilities scholarship can learn from the experiences of filmmakers.
