Co-Designing Urban Planning Engagement and Innovation: Using LEGO® to Facilitate Collaboration, Participation and Ideas

Mark Tewdwr-Jones et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in using co-design methods to achieve urban innovation and planning. Cities are seen as living laboratories, requiring shared responses to social, environmental, and economic challenges. This article examines the case of Newcastle City Futures, a university platform in the UK, which used participatory games, including LEGO® mash-ups, to foster collaboration and generate innovative responses through co-design. The article highlights the importance of accessible translation methods, such as games, in supporting the use of the quadruple helix as an urban innovation system.

It's just the luck of the draw: Luck, good farming and the management of animal disease in Aotearoa New Zealand

Gareth Enticott et al.

Summary: The mobility of livestock in modern farming systems is connected with the geographical spread of animal disease, and government attempts to control this geography through self-government practices. However, farmers' perceptions of luck and the concept of 'good farming' also play a role in shaping their behavior. Studies show that farmers rely on luck to explain animal disease, respond to government control measures, and shift responsibility to experts.

?Hell or high water?: Good farming and environmental care as contested practices in the implementation of nitrate vulnerable zones in Wales

Alex Franklin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates how dairy farmers in Wales try to comply with environmental regulations such as NVZs and the EU Water Framework Directive, despite the high investment costs involved. It also explores why controversial nitrate management practices exist on farms and how some farmers legitimize these practices through narratives of vulnerability and care. The study suggests that the disconnect between traditional farming practices and environmental concerns has led many farmers to feel unable to change, rather than resistant to change.
