Land use/land cover dynamics and perception of the local communities in Bita district, south western Ethiopia

Fikire Belete et al.

Summary: Human settlements and agricultural expansion have led to the simplification of natural ecosystems and loss of biodiversity. This study in Bita district, southwestern Ethiopia used satellite data and interviews to analyze the land use/land cover dynamics. The findings showed a decrease in forestland and an increase in cropland, with population growth and agricultural expansion identified as major drivers. The decline in forest cover was found to have adverse impacts on biodiversity, soil fertility, and water availability. The study emphasizes the importance of involving local communities and stakeholders in natural resource management for sustainable development.

The Study of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) Dynamics and the Perception of Local People in Aykoleba, Northern Ethiopia

Mariye Mehari et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamics and perceptions of land use/land cover change in Aykoleba, Ethiopia over the past four decades using a combination of remote sensing and ground truth data. The results show an increase in forest and bare land, while open bush and grassland, cultivated land, and settlement land have decreased. The local community identified population pressure and overgrazing as the main drivers of land use change.

Effects of land use and land cover change on soil erosion potential in Berhe district: a case study of Legedadi watershed, Ethiopia

Mehari Mariye et al.

Summary: This research examines the impact of land use and land cover change on soil erosion potential in the Legedadi watershed. The results show continuous and active land use and land cover change in the watershed over the last 28 years, leading to changes in soil loss rates. It emphasizes the need for coordinated action by local communities and the government to ensure sustainable natural resource conservation systems.

Land-use and land-cover dynamics and their drivers in the central highlands of Ethiopia with special reference to the Lake Wanchi watershed

Abebe Tufa Angessa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal dynamics of land-use and land-cover changes in the Lake Wanchi watershed in central highlands of Ethiopia over the past 44 years. The major drivers of these changes were identified as agricultural activities, wood extraction, settlement expansion, and infrastructure constructions, with demographic changes, community conflict, and land tenure policy being underlying change drivers.
