Masculinity and War

R. Brian Ferguson

Summary: The association of war with men may be due to a predisposition for males to kill outsiders, but war is not a long-standing phenomenon in human history. Gender-based division of labor leads to socially defined men's work, which helps shape masculine personalities.

Gender-Specific Risk Factors for Psychopathology and Reduced Functioning in a Post-9/11 Veteran Sample

Arielle A. J. Scoglio et al.

Summary: The study found that female combat veterans are more likely to report a history of sexual trauma, while male veterans are more likely to have issues with gambling, impulsivity, and hypersexuality. Both male and female veterans experience higher rates of mental health problems compared to the general population as they transition back into civilian life. Gender-related differences, such as sexual trauma, hypersexuality, and impulsivity, warrant further investigation to understand their potential impact on veteran reintegration and treatment.

Systematic Review of Risk and Protective Factors for Revictimization After Child Sexual Abuse

Arielle A. J. Scoglio et al.

Summary: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a widespread public health problem in the United States, with long-term outcomes including revictimization in adulthood. This systematic review of 25 studies identified risk factors such as co-occurring maltreatment, risky sexual behavior, post-traumatic stress disorder, and maladaptive coping strategies, as well as one protective factor - perceived parental care. The review also highlighted the importance of standardized definitions and measurement in future research on CSA and revictimization.
