Are skilled contingent workers neglected? Evidence from a cross-sector multiple case study on organizational career management practices

Jerome Sulbout et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the level of organizational support for skilled contingent workers' careers through organizational career management practices. The findings indicate that skilled contingent workers do benefit from these practices, which encompass formalization, individual focus, and differentiation. The study further explains these dimensions through contextual variables such as the legal and regulatory framework, companies' HRM configurations and human capital value, and the roles of third-party actors. The identification of these associations leads to the development of three research propositions. This study sets the stage for future research on skilled contingent workers and their careers, as well as their incorporation into HRM strategies, including organizational career management practices.
