Deprivation and psychopathology in the Fragile Families Study: A 15-year longitudinal investigation

Adam Bryant Miller et al.

Summary: The study found that early deprivation experiences from birth to age 3 indirectly impact internalizing and externalizing symptoms in early childhood, later childhood, and adolescence through language ability at age 5. Early exposure to threat, on the other hand, is associated with increased internalizing and externalizing psychopathology across all ages.

Alterations in neural circuits underlying emotion regulation following child maltreatment: a mechanism underlying trauma-related psychopathology

Jessica L. Jenness et al.

Summary: The study found that maltreated youth showed different patterns of brain activation compared to non-maltreated youth when facing negative emotional stimuli, with reduced activation in cognitive control regions and increased activation in regions associated with emotion processing. These alterations in brain function partly explain the association between maltreatment and psychopathology.

The Value of Dimensional Models of Early Experience: Thinking Clearly About Concepts and Categories

Katie A. McLaughlin et al.

Summary: This study reviewed three prevailing approaches to conceptualizing the developmental consequences of early-life adversity and highlighted the value of dimensional models. Dimensional models identify core dimensions of early experience, provide hypotheses about adaptive and maladaptive responses, and articulate specific mechanisms through which these dimensions exert their influences. These models advance specific falsifiable hypotheses grounded in neurodevelopmental and evolutionary principles and provide fertile ground for empirical studies on early-life adversity.

Associations of Early-Life Threat and Deprivation With Executive Functioning in Childhood and Adolescence A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Dylan Johnson et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the quantitative associations between early-life adversities and cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory in young individuals. The findings suggest that early-life deprivation has a stronger association with inhibitory control and working memory domains compared to early-life threat. There were no significant differences in the association of threat and deprivation with cognitive flexibility.

Mechanisms linking socioeconomic status and academic achievement in early childhood: Cognitive stimulation and language

Lucy A. Lurie et al.

Summary: There is a strong positive association between childhood socioeconomic status and academic achievement, mediated by cognitive stimulation and language development. Addressing broader inequalities in access to resources and enhancing cognitive stimulation are crucial in mitigating SES-related disparities in language and academic achievement.
