A Mixed-Method Process Evaluation of an Intervention to Improve Social Reactions to Disclosures of Sexual Assault and Partner Abuse

Emily A. Waterman et al.

Summary: Due to the high rates and negative consequences of sexual assault and partner abuse on college campuses, there are many programs aimed at preventing and responding to these issues. However, most research only focuses on outcome evaluation data, neglecting the important process evaluation data necessary for program improvement and dissemination. This study aimed to provide process evaluation data, including acceptability and feasibility, for a program that aimed to increase positive social reactions and decrease negative social reactions towards individuals who disclose sexual assault and partner abuse. The results showed that the program was both feasible and acceptable, with high satisfaction ratings. Suggestions for program improvement were also given, such as reducing repetition and making scenarios more realistic. Participants who had higher program engagement and usage reported more intentions to provide positive social reactions, less intentions to provide negative social reactions, and exhibited fewer actual negative social reactions. This information is not only useful for adapting the current program, but also for program developers and preventionists seeking to create effective prevention and response programs for sexual assault and partner abuse.

Sharna L. Mathieu et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the status of research into the use of helplines among young people, identifying key themes related to awareness and engagement, nature of problems faced, and service-related factors. Most studies were quantitative, originating from the US and Australia, focusing on telephone and text-based interactions. Further research is needed to fully understand the effectiveness of helplines, especially for marginalized groups and text-based services.
