More Than Words: the Relative Roles of Prosody and Semantics in the Perception of Emotions in Spoken Language by Postlingual Cochlear Implant Users

Summary: The study compares the performance of cochlear implant (CI) users and a control group on perception, selective attention, and integration of emotional semantics and prosody. Results showed that both groups had similar ratings for emotions and selective attention. However, CI users overused semantic information when integrating prosody and semantics, suggesting different cue weighting strategies compared to the control group.

A Cross-Linguistic Validation of the Test for Rating Emotions in Speech: Acoustic Analyses of Emotional Sentences in English, German, and Hebrew

Summary: The Test for Rating Emotions in Speech (T-RES) is a tool developed to assess the processing of emotions in spoken language. This study provides cross-linguistic acoustic validation of the T-RES by analyzing the acoustic characteristics of emotional stimuli in different languages. The results demonstrate the independence of prosody and semantics within the T-RES stimuli and support the cross-linguistic validity of T-RES.

Challenges and opportunities for telehealth assessment during COVID-19: iT-RES, adapting a remote version of the test for rating emotions in speech

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need to adapt clinical assessment tools to telemedicine, particularly for populations at risk. The study successfully developed iT-RES, an online version of a speech-perception assessment tool, which closely followed the performance of the original lab-based tool T-RES. This remote adaptation shows promise in addressing the challenges of remote auditory assessments and encourages further efforts in telehealth adaptations of clinical services.

Summary: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability (ASD-without-ID) do not significantly differ from matched controls in the identification of simple prosodic emotions, but perform worse in the identification of complex prosodic emotions. Intervention programs may focus on improving performance with complex emotions by leveraging intact abilities in processing simple emotions.
