Modeling the emergence of affective polarization in the social media society

Petter Tornberg et al.

Summary: Political polarization has been on the rise in recent decades, hindering policymaking and eroding trust in democratic institutions. While traditional views attribute this to extreme opinions being amplified in echo chambers facilitated by new media technology, a new theory suggests that polarization is driven more by strengthening social identities within partisan groups. This identity-centered perspective has not been formally modeled, unlike opinion-centered views, and may lead to runaway polarization if certain tipping points are crossed.
