Cognitive Dissonance in Technology Adoption: A Study of Smart Home Users

Davit Marikyan et al.

Summary: This study addresses the outcomes of technology use when it falls short of expectations and the coping mechanisms users may use in such circumstances. By adopting Cognitive Dissonance Theory, the study explores how negative disconfirmation of expectations can result in positive outcomes and how negative emotions impact the selection of dissonance reduction mechanisms. The study finds that post-disconfirmation dissonance leads to feelings of anger, guilt, and regret, which correlate with dissonance reduction mechanisms, ultimately affecting satisfaction and well-being.

Why Context Matters: The Influence of Application Domain on Preferred Degree of Anthropomorphism and Gender Attribution in Human-Robot Interaction

Eileen Roesler et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of application domain on the preferred degree of anthropomorphism in robots and investigates gender associations. The results indicate that the preference for anthropomorphism in robots varies across different domains, with lower degrees preferred in the industrial domain and higher degrees preferred in the social domain. Furthermore, robots are predominantly associated with functionality rather than gender, and even in the social domain, male names are more frequently chosen for robots.

Human-Like Robots and the Uncanny Valley A Meta-Analysis of User Responses Based on the Godspeed Scales

Martina Mara et al.

Summary: The well-known uncanny valley hypothesis suggests a curvilinear relationship between a robot's human likeness and the observers' responses. Low to medium human likeness leads to more positive responses, while highly anthropomorphic robots are expected to elicit negative responses. However, empirical findings on this hypothesis are inconclusive.

Assessing the hotel service robot interaction on tourists' behaviour: the role of anthropomorphism

Jing Wen Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that user satisfaction with service robots in a hotel had a positive impact on user satisfaction, attitude towards the hotel, and room purchase intention. Users were most likely to accept medium-human likeness robots and least likely to accept high-human likeness robots. The study provides valuable influencing factors and practical suggestions for researching hotel service robots.

Creepy cats and strange high houses: Support for configural processing in testing predictions of nine uncanny valley theories

Alexander Diel et al.

Summary: The concept of the uncanny valley, proposed by Masahiro Mori in 1970, refers to a region in the continuum of human-likeness where an entity may elicit a cold, eerie, repellent feeling. Recent studies have shown that this feeling can be induced not only by entities modeled after humans but also nonhuman animals. Despite various proposed theories to explain the mechanisms underlying the uncanny valley effect, the perceptual and cognitive factors are not yet fully understood. A within-subjects experiment involving 136 participants tested the predictions of nine classes of theories, with configural processing theory and atypicality theory showing the most significant effects.

The Influence of Anthropomorphism on Giving Personal Names to Objects

Serge Bredart

Summary: The study found a significant relationship between giving specific names to objects and object personification, but object personification was not a prerequisite for name giving. Approximately 40% of participants who gave personal names to objects did not attribute psychological characteristics to those objects.

Understanding anthropomorphism in service provision: a meta-analysis of physical robots, chatbots, and other AI

Markus Blut et al.

Summary: An increasing number of firms are introducing service robots to provide services to customers, using either humanlike robots or machinelike robots. There is no consensus on whether customers' anthropomorphism of robots facilitates or constrains their use intention. The study synthesizes data from 11,053 individuals interacting with service robots to clarify this issue and develop a comprehensive model investigating the relationship between anthropomorphism and its antecedents and consequences.

I Like Your Suggestion! the role of humanlikeness and parasocial relationship on the website versus voice shopper's perception of recommendations

Claire Whang et al.

Summary: This study investigates how the unique relationship between consumers and AI-powered voice assistants affects consumer evaluation of recommended products. The results show that consumers perceive voice assistants as detached pseudohuman agents while viewing websites as tools used by service providers, leading to a more positive evaluation of websites.
