Anterior cruciate ligament injury: towards a gendered environmental approach

Joanne L. Parsons et al.

Summary: For over 20 years, the ACL injury rate disparity between girls/women and boys/men has remained unchanged. This paper highlights the absence of gender as an influential factor in discussions surrounding ACL injuries, and proposes integrating gender as a developmental environment to better understand gender's impact on injury prevention and treatment. By incorporating gender into the study of ACL injuries, there is potential for new interdisciplinary research and more effective approaches to addressing this ongoing issue.

Investigating correlates of athletic identity and sport-related injury outcomes: a scoping review

Tian Renton et al.

Summary: Athletic identity was significantly associated with various psychosocial, behavioural, and injury-specific outcomes, while the impact of injury on athletic identity was inconsistent and limited. Future research should include diverse athlete samples and reference theoretical injury models for further exploration.

Athletic identity and sport commitment in athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction who have returned to sports at their pre-injury level of competition

Shunsuke Ohji et al.

Summary: The study found that athletes who returned to sports at the same level of competition as before ACL reconstruction had higher scores in athletic identity and sport commitment, and lower scores in kinesiophobia. These self-beliefs may play an important role in athletes' return to sports after ACL reconstruction.

Athletic Identity in Youth Athletes: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Bianca R. Edison et al.

Summary: Athletic identity (AI) in youth athletes has been less studied, but research shows AI levels vary by race/ethnicity, increase during adolescence, and higher levels may protect against burnout. Transitioning to higher level of play during adolescence may correlate with stronger senses of AI.
