Sudden increased mortality in large seemingly healthy farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) was associated with environmental and dietary changes

J-E. Dessen et al.

Summary: Mortality of seemingly healthy farmed Atlantic salmon is a significant issue in Norwegian aquaculture, with this study reporting a sudden death event during winter in northern Norway. The experimental fish fed test diets showed increased mortality, higher liver lipid content, altered fatty acid composition, and elevated enzyme levels compared to non-dying fish. Immediate reduction in mortality was observed when the fish were starved, indicating a potential link between dietary and environmental changes and the observed mortality.
