An eco-friendly facile approach for imparting multifunctional protection properties to cellulose/wool blends

Nabil A. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: A green and easy nano-finishing method was developed to enhance the functional properties of cotton/wool and viscose/wool blends. The method utilized TiO2 and/or Ag-NPs as active ingredients, along with citric acid and/or succinic acid/SHP as ester-crosslinking/fixing systems. The results showed that excellent durable functional properties were achieved using the specified formulation and fixation conditions. SEM and EDX analysis were conducted to examine the interaction between the finishing ingredients and the treated substrates.

Polysaccharides and Metal Nanoparticles for Functional Textiles: A Review

Marta Fernandes et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology is a powerful tool for transforming textiles into high-performance, value-added products. The incorporation of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in textiles allows for the obtention of multifunctional properties without compromising the inherent characteristics of the textile. The use of ecofriendly sources, such as polysaccharides, for the synthesis of MNPs is of high importance. The main polysaccharides used in these processes include chitosan, alginate, starch, cyclodextrins, and cellulose, while silver, zinc, copper, and titanium are the most explored MNPs. The functionalized textiles have potential applications in healthcare, protection, and environmental remediation.

Non-Leaching, Rapid Bactericidal and Biocompatible Polyester Fabrics Finished with Benzophenone Terminated N-halamine

Shu Wang et al.

Summary: Pathogenic bacteria can rapidly proliferate on porous fabrics, forming bacterial plaques/biofilms and increasing the potential for cross-transmission of diseases. This study developed a novel N-halamine compound that could be covalently bonded onto PET fabrics, providing outstanding and rapid bactericidal activity without compromising the fabrics’ physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Adhesion of bacteria to the treated PET fabrics was easy, and the bacteria were quickly inactivated within 10 seconds.

Synthesis of copper nanoparticles with controllable crystallinity and their photothermal property

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Copper nanoparticles of about 80 nm in diameter were successfully prepared in aqueous solution by reducing copper salts with sodium hypophosphite in the presence of hydrochloric acid and polyacrylamide as the capping agent. The presence of H+ facilitated the formation of Cu nanoparticles, while the crystallinity of the nanoparticles was highly dependent on the Cl- concentration. The resulting Cu-PVA hydrogel demonstrated significant photothermal conversion efficiency and bacterial killing efficiency under laser irradiation.

Modification of PET and PA fabrics with alginate and copper oxides nanoparticles

Darka Markovic et al.

Summary: The study aimed to fabricate novel antimicrobial nanocomposite materials by in-situ syntheses of Cu-based nanoparticles on PET and PA fabrics. The concentration of alginate and copper(II) sulphate solutions influenced Cu2+ ions uptake and total copper content, with PET fabric containing nearly 30% more copper than PA fabric. Nanocomposite with PET fibers exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity, while nanocomposite with PA fibers showed maximum antibacterial and fungistatic activities.
