Near-roadway air pollution associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality - Multiethnic cohort study in Southern California

Zhanghua Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that increased exposure to non-freeway air pollution near residences in Southern California is associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 severity, including the need for intensive respiratory support, ICU admission, and mortality. These associations were independent of regional fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide exposures, and were consistent across different age, sex, and race/ethnicity subgroups.

Exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances during fetal life and hospitalization for infectious disease in childhood: A study among 1,503 children from the Odense Child Cohort

Louise Dalsager et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between maternal serum concentrations of five PFASs during pregnancy and the child's rate of hospitalization due to common infectious diseases between birth and 4 years of age. It found that a doubling in maternal PFOS concentration was associated with an increased risk of hospitalization due to any infection, and doubling of PFOA or PFOS increased the risk of lower respiratory tract infections.

Acting rapidly to deploy readily available methane mitigation measures by sector can immediately slow global warming

Ilissa B. Ocko et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the climate benefits of fast action to reduce methane emissions compared to slower and delayed mitigation timelines. It finds that rapid implementation of available mitigation measures can significantly reduce near-term temperature rise and slow the global-mean rate of warming. Urgently scaling up efforts to implement methane mitigation measures is crucial to limiting climate damages in the near-term.

Health and economic impact of air pollution in the states of India: the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Anamika Pandey et al.

Summary: The study estimated the impact of air pollution on human health and the economy in India. In 2019, air pollution led to 1.67 million deaths and an economic loss of $36.8 billion, accounting for 1.36% of India's GDP. The economic impact varied significantly among states, with low per-capita GDP states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar experiencing the highest losses.
