Physiological Effects of Exposure to Copper and Chromium in Three Floating Aquatic Macrophyte Species

Debora Cristina de Souza et al.

Summary: The resistance of plants to heavy metals involves different ecotypes and intracellular strategies for prevention, tolerance, and detoxification. This study focused on the physiological effects of copper and chromium exposure in three plant species. Results showed Eichhornia crassipes had an efficient defense system against copper and could accumulate chromium in roots, while Salvinia biloba and Pistia stratiotes accumulated and transported metals but lacked a defense mechanism and entered senescence.
