Lymph Node Positivity in T1/T2 Rectal Cancer: a Word of Caution in an Era of Increased Incidence and Changing Biology for Rectal Cancer

Adam C. Fields et al.

Summary: The study found that in T1 and T2 stage rectal cancer, the rate of positive lymph nodes is higher when poor differentiation and lymphovascular invasion are present. These results can be taken into consideration prior to surgical treatment.

Survival in colon and rectal cancers in Finland and Sweden through 50 years

Kari Hemminki et al.

Summary: Over the past 50 years, favorable developments in 1-year and 5-year survival rates for colon and rectal cancer patients in Finland and Sweden have been observed, particularly in the early follow-up period. Female patients had slightly higher survival rates than males. In colon cancer, the improvement in 5-year survival was mainly driven by the improvement in 1-year survival, while in rectal cancer, the positive development extended beyond the first year.

Recurrence Outcomes Less Favorable in T1 Rectal Cancer than in T1 Colon Cancer

Li-Chun Chang et al.

Summary: A study conducted at the National Taiwan University Hospital from 2005 to 2014 compared the disease-free survival of T1 cancer arising from the rectum versus the colon. The results showed that T1 rectal cancer had a higher risk of recurrence compared to T1 colon cancer, with rectal location being an independent risk factor for recurrence. Further research is needed to explore whether adjuvant therapy or closer surveillance can reduce the risk of recurrence in T1 rectal cancer.

Endoscopic Resection Before Surgery Does Not Affect the Recurrence Rate in Patients With High-Risk T1 Colorectal Cancer

Hiroyuki Takamaru et al.

Summary: This study found that there was no significant difference in recurrence rates between patients undergoing endoscopic resection before surgery and those undergoing primary surgery for high-risk T1 CRC, indicating that endoscopic resection may be acceptable for high-risk T1 CRC.

Emerging Trends for Radio-Immunotherapy in Rectal Cancer

Claudia Corro et al.

Summary: Despite obstacles in the treatment of rectal cancer patients, recent evidence suggests that radiotherapy combined with immune checkpoint inhibition could be a promising approach. However, the biological and clinical impact of this combination remains unclear, and further studies are needed to optimize its effectiveness. The heterogeneity of rectal cancer at the genetic and molecular levels, as well as the importance of tumor immune contexture, highlight the complexity of developing personalized treatment strategies for this disease.
