Evaluation of durum wheat lines derived from interspecific crosses under drought and heat stress

Hafid Aberkane et al.

Summary: Pre-breeding using wild relatives can provide useful traits to enhance durum wheat resilience to drought and heat stress. High variation in agronomic and phenology traits can impact grain yield under different stress conditions. Gene introgression from wild relatives can improve wheat resilience to cope with climate change challenges.

Analysis of the effects of climate, host resistance, maturity and sowing date on wheat stem rust epidemics

Bita Naseri et al.

Summary: The study showed that wheat cultivar, sowing date, and disease-assessment time significantly affected stem rust severity. Through principal component analysis and multiple regression model, it was found that variables such as disease-onset and maturity date, spring minimum temperature and rainy days, minimum temperature days within 5-20 degrees C, humidity above 60%, resistance index, and sowing date were important factors in predicting and managing stem rust epidemics effectively.

Evaluation of sainfoin accessions exposed to powdery mildew disease at four locations in Iran

Mohammad Ali Alizadeh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated resistance of 19 sainfoin accessions to powdery mildew, identifying sources 15353 and 3001 as resistant, Oshnavieh and Polycross as semi-resistant, and others as susceptible. Resistant accessions exhibited high yields and quality traits, with powdery mildew severity negatively correlated with quality indicators. Sources 3001 and 15353 were found stable across locations, suggesting their potential for future breeding programs. Continuing evaluation of sainfoin germplasm is recommended to identify further resistant accessions.

Contribution of Wild Relatives to Durum Wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) Yield Stability across Contrasted Environments

Hafid Aberkane et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the yield stability of 67 lines of durum wheat derived from interspecific crosses under various environmental conditions, and found that some lines showed high productivity and stability in different environments, making them suitable for unpredictable climatic conditions. Limited backcrosses can produce high yielding and stable germplasm while increasing diversity in a breeding pipeline. Comparing different stability approaches, it was found that some methods can be used interchangeably while others can be complementary to achieve both broad adaptation and higher yield.

Assessment of Drought and Heat Tolerance of Durum Wheat Lines Derived from Interspecific Crosses Using Physiological Parameters and Stress Indices

Hafid Aberkane et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of drought and chronic heat stress on physiological parameters of durum wheat lines derived from interspecific crosses and their association with yield. Physiological parameters like canopy temperature (CT) and maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) showed significant correlations with grain yield and biomass under heat and drought stress, providing potential indicators for selecting wheat varieties with tolerance to these abiotic stresses.

Multi-Environment Screening of Durum Wheat Genotypes for Drought Tolerance in Changing Climatic Events

Sourour Ayed et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify drought-tolerant durum wheat genotypes in Tunisia, using six drought tolerance indices to evaluate 11 genotypes. The results showed that G6 and G8 (landraces) were the most drought-tolerant genotypes, while G7, G9, G10, and G11 (landraces) were identified as sensitive to drought.

Sourour Ayed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the yield stability and genotype x environment interaction of 24 promising durum wheat lines in Mediterranean regions. Results showed that elite and wild relative-derived lines exhibited better yield stability and performance across multiple environments, highlighting their potential for breeding programs.
