Non-chemical post-harvest disinfestation of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Tommy Atkins mango using hot-water immersion treatment

P. Ocitti et al.

Summary: Mango production and trade are vital sources of employment, food, and income in Sub Saharan Africa, but face challenges due to restrictive quarantine measures caused by the invasive fruit fly. By studying postharvest disinfestation parameters for the fruit fly using hot-water treatments, an effective treatment protocol has been developed to help exporters access lucrative markets in the U.S.A. and Europe.

Hot Water Treatment for Post-Harvest Disinfestation of Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Its Effect on cv. Tommy Atkins Mango

Nelson L. Mwando et al.

Summary: This study developed a hot water treatment protocol for controlling the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis and evaluated its impact on the quality of Tommy Atkins mangoes. The results showed that a hot water treatment at 46.1 degrees Celsius for 72.63 minutes can lead to complete mortality of the most heat-tolerant larval stage, ensuring effective post-harvest disinfestation without adverse effects on mango quality.
