Role of the T cell vitamin D receptor in severe COVID-19

Jay K. Kolls et al.

Summary: New research has found evidence of impaired vitamin D gene signature in CD4(+) T cells in patients with severe COVID-19. It shows that vitamin D can alter the epigenetic landscape of CD4(+) T cells, induce key transcription factors, reduce levels of certain inflammatory factors, increase levels of others, and generate T(H)1 cells that are beneficial in preventing or resolving COVID-19.

Factors Influencing Lung Function in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis in Western Romania

Mihaela Dediu et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to identify major factors influencing pulmonary function in CF patients, with results showing significant impact of BMI and age on lung function. The research suggests that better nutritional status and infection prophylaxis should be emphasized in the comprehensive clinical management strategy for pediatric CF patients in Romania.

Longitudinal course of clinical lung clearance index in children with cystic fibrosis

Bettina S. Frauchiger et al.

Summary: This study described the longitudinal course of LCI in children with CF during routine clinical surveillance, finding a more pronounced increase in LCI during adolescence. Factors such as colonization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Aspergillus fumigatus, pulmonary exacerbations, CF-related diabetes, and bronchopulmonary aspergillosis were associated with a higher increase in LCI over time.

Abnormal Lung Clearance Index in Cystic Fibrosis Children with Normal FEV1 and Single-Breath Nitrogen Washout Test

Ajay S. Kasi et al.

Summary: Comparing the results of respiratory tests between CF patients and healthy controls, significant differences were found in SIII and LCI in CF patients, with significant correlations between both parameters and lung function tests. In patients with normal FEV1, it is possible for LCI to be abnormal despite normal SIII.

Summary: In patients with CF, higher doses of vitamin D were associated with a decreased risk of deficiency and higher serum calcidiol levels. However, nearly one-third of CF patients still do not reach sufficient levels of vitamin D despite the new guidelines.

A Clinician's guide to vitamin D supplementation for patients with cystic fibrosis

Colleen Wood et al.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with cystic fibrosis and can lead to poor bone health and declining pulmonary function. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has issued guidelines for the treatment of vitamin D deficiency, but most centers are still unable to achieve target serum vitamin D levels for their patients. Future research is needed to determine ideal treatment regimens and the impact of new triple therapy cystic fibrosis drug combinations on vitamin D-related clinical outcomes.

Correlation of computed tomography findings and lung function in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis

Andrew Fretzayas et al.

Summary: Most studies have shown moderate correlations between forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and other spirometric indices with CT structural lung damage. However, there are patients with normal FEV1 but abnormal CT and vice versa at an individual level. Longitudinal studies indicate that deterioration of structural lung damage does not occur in parallel with lung function progression, and lung clearance index is a better predictor of CT findings.

Summary: The results showed that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 significantly decreased Th lymphocyte proliferative responses in both drug-naive and treated pSS patients, and B lymphocyte proliferation in drug-naive pSS PBMC cultures. The study concluded that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 regulated immune responses in both treated and drug-naive pSS patients.
