Post-intensive care syndrome in a cohort of infants & young children receiving integrated care via a pediatric critical care & neurotrauma recovery program: A pilot investigation

Trevor A. Hall et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the long-term impact of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) in children and provide timely treatment and support through children and families' participation in follow-up clinics. Through various assessments, we found various PICS-related issues in the early phase of recovery after discharge, with some discrepancies between parents/caregivers and clinicians, highlighting the importance of multiple assessments and perspectives.

Efficacy of Melatonin for Sleep Disturbance in Children with Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial

Karen Maria Barlow et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of melatonin treatment for sleep disturbance in youth with persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The results showed that melatonin 3 mg significantly reduced sleep-related problems and depressive symptoms, while the melatonin 10 mg group also demonstrated some effectiveness in addressing these issues.

Early cognitive impairment is common in pediatric patients following mild traumatic brain injury

Summary: Approximately 40% of pediatric trauma patients with mild traumatic brain injury suffer from early cognitive impairment. Lower initial GCS score, higher ISS, and injuries involving motor vehicles are associated with an increased risk of early cognitive impairment in this population.

The Association Between Functional Status and Health-Related Quality of Life Following Discharge from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Emily Z. Holding et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 275 pediatric patients with ABI and found that many children who underwent critical care experience new functional impairments leading to poorer HRQOL post-discharge. An increase in FSS at discharge was identified as a significant risk factor for worse HRQOL in the months following hospital discharge.

Cognitive Dysfunction After Analgesia and Sedation: Out of the Operating Room and Into the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Ashley D. Turner et al.

Summary: There is a growing recognition of neurologic dysfunctions in critically ill children who require sedation, leading to the term pediatric post-intensive care syndrome (PICS-p). Studies consistently identify sedative and opioid analgesic exposures as risk factors for in-hospital delirium and post-discharge neurologic sequelae. Animal models support these clinical observations, indicating the need for further understanding of the role of sedation in cognitive dysfunction and the importance of sleep quality in overall outcomes.
