Comparison of Random Forest and Neural Network in Modeling the Performance and Emissions of a Natural Gas Spark Ignition Engine

Jinlong Liu et al.

Summary: Machine learning models can accelerate the development of internal combustion engines. This study assessed the feasibility of using data-driven methods to predict the performance of a diesel engine modified to natural gas spark ignition. Two widely used ML algorithms, random forest and artificial neural network, were compared for their applicability. The results showed that the artificial neural network model performed better in predicting engine emissions compared to the random forest model.

Machine learning assisted modeling of mixing timescale for LES/PDF of high-Karlovitz turbulent premixed combustion

Jinlong Liu et al.

Summary: Accurate modeling of mixing in high-Karlovitz turbulent premixed flames remains challenging, with a power-law mixing timescale model found to be highly sensitive to model parameters. Machine learning is introduced as an alternative for accurate calibration of these parameters, with excellent performance observed for assisting mixing modeling. The study also compares different machine learning algorithms for specifying mixing model parameters and discusses the feasibility, interpretability, applicability, generality, and portability of using machine learning for turbulent combustion modeling studies.

On the use of artificial neural networks to model the performance and emissions of a heavy-duty natural gas spark ignition engine

Qiao Huang et al.

Summary: The paper investigated the use of an artificial neural network algorithm to simulate the nonlinear combustion process inside the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The neural network accurately learned the combustion characteristics and predicted engine responses with acceptable errors. The well-trained models successfully identified the complex relationships between key operating variables and engine responses, indicating the neural network algorithm's appropriateness for the application studied.

Effect of altitude conditions on combustion and performance of a turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine

Zhentao Liu et al.

Summary: The performance degradation of diesel engines at high altitudes is mainly due to extended ignition delay and reduced gas density inside the cylinder, leading to increased pressure rise rate, shortened engine lifespan, decreased efficiency, increased emissions, and power loss. Additional fundamental investigations are needed to address these issues in plateau regions.

Effects of injection timing and CO2 dilution on combustion and emissions behaviors of a stoichiometric GDI engine under medium load conditions

Changming Gong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the effects of adding CO2 and retarding injection timing on combustion and emissions behaviors of a gasoline direct injection engine. The results showed that adding CO2 reduced peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate, and had an impact on cylinder temperature.

Experimental Investigation of Combustion Characteristics of a Single Cylinder Diesel Engine at Altitude

Zhentao Liu et al.

Summary: The change in atmospheric conditions at high altitudes has been found to affect the combustion characteristics of heavy-duty diesel engines, particularly in the range from sea level to 2000 m, with lower in-cylinder pressure, higher bulk cylinder temperature, and slight changes in combustion characteristics. However, it is not necessary to adjust the engine electric control unit (ECU) when operating in the USA under the conditions investigated in this study.
