Eight-year Continuous Tillage Practice Impacts Soil Properties and Forms of Potassium under Maize-based Cropping Systems in Inceptisols of Eastern India

Gopal Kumar et al.

Summary: Intensive conventional tillage has negatively impacted soil quality and potassium availability in maize-based cropping areas in eastern India. A field study conducted in 2018 showed that zero tillage improved soil parameters compared to other tillage practices, and the maize-chickpea cropping system had higher nutrient availability. Therefore, zero tillage and maize-chickpea cropping may be more effective in improving soil quality and potassium availability compared to conventional practices.

Crop yields and soil organic matter pools in zero-till direct-seeded rice-based cropping systems as influenced by fertigation levels in the Indo-Gangetic plains in India

Juhi et al.

Summary: Fertigation in rice-based cropping systems has drawn attention from farmers for its potential to increase crop yield and improve fertilizer use efficiency. This study examined the impact of fertigation on soil organic carbon pools and yield in zero-till direct-seeded rice-based cropping systems. The results showed that fertigation levels significantly influenced both crop yield and soil organic matter content.

Impact of Land-Use Changes on Soil Properties and Carbon Pools in India: A Meta-analysis

Rajeev Padbhushan et al.

Summary: This study found that land-use changes have significant impacts on soil carbon and microbial biomass. Grasslands, plantation lands, and cultivated lands experienced the greatest loss of soil organic carbon compared to native forest lands. Microbial biomass was lower in other land uses compared to forests. All land uses had higher carbon dioxide equivalent emissions than forest land. Conversion of forest land to cultivated land resulted in losses of total carbon, labile carbon, non-labile carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and soil organic carbon stocks. Changes in soil carbon pools and properties were more pronounced in surface soils. The restoration of carbon stocks varied among different land uses.

Variations in soil organic carbon content with chronosequence, soil depth and aggregate size under shifting cultivation

Sabina Yasmin Laskar et al.

Summary: Shifting cultivation is an important agricultural form globally, with significant impact on the cultural identity of indigenous communities. The study found significant changes in soil bulk density, aggregate stability, and soil organic carbon content with the transition from undisturbed forest to slash-and-burn cultivation and fallow phases. The research concluded that a minimum of 20 years of fallow period is required to achieve soil organic carbon content and carbon stocks comparable with intact forest land.

Meta-Analysis Approach to Measure the Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on Crop Performance, Microbial Activity, and Carbon Stocks in Indian Soils

Rajeev Padbhushan et al.

Summary: Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) has been shown to increase yields of rice and wheat, improve soil quality, enhance soil carbon sequestration, and boost microbial activity. INM outperforms 100% NPK in various soil types, including loamy soils and clayey soils.

Agroforestry transitions: The good, the bad and the ugly

Ossi I. Ollinaho et al.

Summary: This article examines the definitions and framings of agroforestry in academic literature and policies, identifying three key framings. It explores how different research schools focus on distinct points of departure for agroforestry transitions. The article scrutinizes agroecological, agribusiness, and forest degradation transitions, providing examples from field research in Brazil.
