Autocracy, democracy, globalization, and environmental pollution in developing world: Fresh evidence from STIRPAT model

Atif Jahanger et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of autocracy, democracy, and globalization on carbon emissions in developing countries. The results suggest that autocracy, political globalization, economic growth, energy consumption, and capital formation contribute to environmental degradation, while democracy and globalization have a reducing effect on it. The findings are consistent across various robustness checks, providing valuable policy implications for promoting environmental sustainability.

Summary: The study shows that institutional factors such as political stability, corruption control, and rule of law are crucial in reducing carbon emissions and improving environmental quality, with the interaction between political stability and rule of law having the potential to decrease CO2 emissions. Furthermore, foreign direct investment has heterogeneous effects on carbon emissions across different income groups, and trade openness has differing impacts on CO2 emissions in countries with varying income levels.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of income, human capital, globalization, renewable energy consumption, and trade openness on environmental pollution and ecological footprint in China. The findings revealed a U-shaped quadratic relationship between environmental pollution and income level, with human capital playing a key role in reducing environmental degradation while renewable energy was insufficient to meet environmental requirements. The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis did not hold for China in this study.

Summary: The study found that reduced environmental sustainability indices improved in low- and middle-income countries, but degraded in some high-income countries. Improvements in institutional quality support environmental sustainability, but tourism spending degrades it. Surprisingly, negative environmental effects of international tourism are exacerbated in countries with good institutional quality.

The Impact of Quality of Governance, Renewable Energy and Foreign Direct Investment on Sustainable Development in Cee Countries

Mihaela Simionescu et al.

Summary: Recent debates on the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the context of the European Green Deal indicate that pollution control can be achieved through channels other than economic development. The role of renewable energy consumption in reducing pollution is correlated with quality of governance. Government effectiveness reduces pollution both in the short-run and long-run, while control of corruption and rule of law support environmental protection in the long-run. Google searches for corruption as a proxy for quality of governance have immediate and practical implications in nowcasting pollution.
