Rational determination of cone penetration test quantity in a two-dimensional vertical cross-section for site investigation

Zheng Guan et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop a rational method to determine the minimal CPT quantity required to achieve a target level of accuracy, based on an extensive parametric study using random field simulation and Bayesian compressive sampling to interpolate spatially varying, but correlated, CPT data. The proposed method, illustrated and validated using real CPT data, performs well in practice.

Deep learning-based evaluation of factor of safety with confidence interval for tunnel deformation in spatially variable soil

Jinzhang Zhang et al.

Summary: A deep learning-based method using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for efficient prediction of tunnel deformation in spatially variable soil. The CNN model applied to new untrained datasets showed mean squared error less than 0.02 and correlation coefficient larger than 0.96, indicating the potential to replace RFDM analysis for Monte Carlo simulations. Applying dropout to retrain the model and using the technique when performing inference helps gauge the model's confidence interval. The excellent agreement between the CNN model prediction and RFDM calculated results demonstrates the method’s potential for tunnel performance analysis in spatially variable soils.

Efficient CPT locations for characterizing spatial variability of soil properties within a multilayer vertical cross-section using information entropy and Bayesian compressive sensing

Tengyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Subsurface geological profiles often contain multiple soil layers, and the spatial variability of soil properties within these layers is crucial in geo-structure analysis. Limited CPT soundings at different locations may reveal varying accuracy in spatial variability of soil properties due to inhomogeneous subsurface conditions. Efficient selection of testing locations is essential in obtaining accurate information on spatial variability of soil properties in a cost-effective manner.

Delineating the spatial distribution of soil liquefaction potential in a cross-section from limited cone penetration tests

Zheng Guan et al.

Summary: The damage caused by soil liquefaction during earthquakes is influenced by the total volume and spatial distribution of liquefied soils. Proper characterization of the spatial distribution of liquefaction potential of subsurface soils is critical in earthquake hazard assessment. This study introduces a nonparametric and data-driven method to interpret FS cross-sections directly from sparse CPT soundings, enabling estimation of the total volume and spatial distribution of liquefied soils. The proposed method shows promising performance using both simulated and real CPT data.
