Influence of irradiance on the growth and biochemical composition of Nitzschia aff. pellucida

Isaac Lisondro et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of irradiance and operation modes on the biomass production and biochemical composition of the diatom Nitzschia aff. pellucida, particularly focusing on fatty acid profile. Results showed that the growth rate increased with irradiance, but photo-inhibition was observed at higher irradiances. The model proposed considers the modification of saturation constant as a function of available irradiance, and the strain was found to be better adapted to low irradiances.

Chemical composition and apparent digestibility of a panel of dried microalgae and cyanobacteria biomasses in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

R. Cerri et al.

Summary: Despite limited information on the nutritive value of microalgae and cyanobacteria for carnivorous fish species, this study evaluated the chemical composition and nutrient digestibility of dried whole-cell biomasses. Results showed heterogeneous composition and nutrient profile among the tested microalgae and cyanobacteria, suggesting their potential as alternative protein sources for aquafeeds. Rainbow trout digestion studies ranked the biomasses into two groups based on crude protein and energy digestibility, highlighting the importance of cell-wall structure/composition in nutrient accessibility.

Processing Methodologies of Wet Microalga Biomass Toward Oil Separation: An Overview

Vania Pojo et al.

Summary: Microalgae are seen as a promising alternative source for lipid extraction due to their high potential for synthesizing fatty acids, particularly polyunsaturated ones. Direct extraction from wet biomass could provide economic advantages, but more research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this process. Most developments in lipid extraction from wet microalgae biomass are currently at a bench-scale level, requiring further large-scale demonstration to confirm their competitiveness.

Influence of Light Conditions on Microalgae Growth and Content of Lipids, Carotenoids, and Fatty Acid Composition

Yevhen Maltsev et al.

Summary: Microalgae are a valuable natural resource for producing a variety of value-added products. The optimal light intensity for their growth is around 26,400 µmol photons m(-2) s(-1), with higher intensity leading to increased lipid synthesis and triacylglyceride content. Light intensity also affects the synthesis of fatty acids and carotenoids in microalgae biomass. Additionally, combining light with other stresses can enhance the productivity of algae.
