The role of Exosomal miRNAs in cancer

Chuanyun Li et al.

Summary: Exosomal miRNAs play a critical role in regulating genes and their altered expression is associated with almost all human cancers. They modulate processes that interfere with cancer immunity and microenvironment, and significantly impact tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, and drug resistance. Understanding the detailed mechanisms of miRNAs in cancer development could contribute to both cancer treatment and prevention of malignant diseases. This review highlights recent advances in cancer-derived exosomal miRNAs, including their sorting and delivery mechanisms, as well as their potential as diagnostic and prognostic markers and in detecting cancer resistance to therapeutic agents.

MicroRNA-21 expression, serum tumor markers, and immunohistochemistry in canine mammary tumors

Eman S. Ramadan et al.

Summary: This study found that miR-21 was upregulated 12.84-fold in Canine Mammary Tumors (CMT), with CA15-3 levels elevated in all animals and CEA levels showing no change compared to controls. Positive vimentin immunoreactivity was associated with high expression of miR-21, suggesting that miR-21 may be a more sensitive, noninvasive indicator for CMT.

Plasma Exosomes Derived From Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease and Renal Transplant Recipients Have Different Effects on Vascular Calcification

Xiao Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that plasma exosomes from ESRD patients significantly promoted vascular smooth muscle cells calcification, while renal transplantation partially attenuated this procalcification effect. Fetuin-A and MGP were decreased, but Annexin-A2 was increased in ESRD-Ex, and renal transplantation could increase the level of Fetuin-A rather than MGP. The levels of Fetuin-A and MGP in plasma exosomes were negatively while the levels of Annexin-A2 in plasma exosomes were positively correlated to coronary artery calcification scores (CACS).

miR-21: a non-specific biomarker of all maladies

Ana E. Jenike et al.

Summary: miRNA-21 is considered as a specific predictive or prognostic biomarker for at least 29 diseases, but lacks specificity for any one disease, thus making it not an ideal candidate for a biomarker despite continued evaluation. This issue of non-specificity in biomarker designation is shared with other common, ubiquitous miRNAs and warrants concern for their use as biomarkers as well.

Summary: Exosomes from extracellular vesicles play a role in cancer progression by transporting various substances to recipient cells and participating in processes such as remodeling of the tumor microenvironment, promoting angiogenesis, metastasis, invasion, and regulating the immune escape of tumor cells. However, the exact molecular mechanisms of their involvement in these processes remain unclear.
