Tolerance of Yarrowia lipolytica to inhibitors commonly found in lignocellulosic hydrolysates

Oliver Konzock et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the individual and combined effects of inhibitors found in hydrolysate on the growth of Y. lipolytica. By overexpressing native genes XR, XDH, and XK, an engineered xylose consuming strain showed similar inhibitor tolerance in glucose and xylose. The identification of major growth inhibitors in a synthetic hydrolysate will improve the targeted engineering approach to enhance the inhibitor tolerance of Y. lipolytica as a sustainable microbial cell factory.

Whole chromosome loss and genomic instability in mouse embryos after CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing

Stamatis Papathanasiou et al.

Summary: The study tracks aberrations in karyotypes during embryonic development post-Cas9 editing, revealing unwanted on-target complications including major chromosome structural alterations like whole chromosome loss. Micronuclei and chromosome bridges are observed as consequences of mitosis errors, contributing to these common karyotype aberrations after Cas9 treatment in embryos.

Aerobic growth physiology of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on sucrose is strain-dependent

Carla Ines Soares Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The study shows that sucrose metabolism in S. cerevisiae is a strain-specific trait, with each strain displaying distinct characteristics in extracellular hexose concentrations and invertase activity profiles. The results also suggest potential mixed mechanisms of sucrose utilization by the industrial strain JP1 and the remarkable ability of the wild isolate UFMG-CM-259 to grow faster on sucrose than on glucose. This work provides insights into metabolic traits that can be exploited to enhance sucrose catabolic rates and bioprocess efficiency.
