Effect of adjunctive vitamin C, glucocorticoids, and vitamin B1 on longer-term mortality in adults with sepsis or septic shock: a systematic review and a component network meta-analysis

Tomoko Fujii et al.

Summary: This study did not find significant differences in longer-term mortality between treatments and placebo/usual care or between different treatments. There was no evidence that vitamin C or B1 affected organ dysfunction or ICU length of stay. However, adding glucocorticoid to other treatments shortened the duration of vasopressor therapy and ICU stay. Metabolic resuscitation with vitamin C, glucocorticoids, vitamin B1, or combinations of these drugs was not significantly associated with a decrease in longer-term mortality.

Intravenous vitamin C administration to patients with septic shock: a pilot randomised controlled trial

Patrice Rosengrave et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of intravenous vitamin C administration on vasopressor requirements and outcomes in patients with septic shock. The results showed that intravenous vitamin C did not significantly decrease vasopressor dosage or duration. There were also no significant differences in SOFA scores, length of stay, and mortality between the intervention and placebo groups. Further research is needed to consider factors such as intervention timing, dosage, duration, and trial location to provide more definitive evidence.

Effect of Vitamin C, Thiamine, and Hydrocortisone on Ventilator- and Vasopressor-Free Days in Patients With Sepsis The VICTAS Randomized Clinical Trial

Jonathan E. Sevransky et al.

Summary: A trial on the effects of a combination treatment of vitamin C, thiamine, and hydrocortisone on ventilator- and vasopressor-free days in patients with sepsis did not show a significant increase within 30 days. However, the trial was terminated early and may have been underpowered to detect a clinically important difference.

High dose intravenous vitamin C treatment in Sepsis: associations with acute kidney injury and mortality

Thomas R. McCune et al.

Summary: This study revealed that high dose vitamin C therapy in septic patients is associated with an increased risk of AKI and in-hospital mortality. In ICU patients, vitamin C therapy remained a significant risk factor for AKI and did not provide protective benefits against mortality. Comments on the ongoing use of high dose vitamin C in sepsis are warranted due to these observed associations with adverse outcomes.

Effect of High-Dose Zinc and Ascorbic Acid Supplementation vs Usual Care on Symptom Length and Reduction Among Ambulatory Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection The COVID A to Z Randomized Clinical Trial

Suma Thomas et al.

Summary: This study found that treatment with high-dose zinc gluconate, ascorbic acid, or a combination of the two supplements did not significantly decrease the duration of symptoms in ambulatory patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to standard care.

Vaccine Breakthrough Infections with SARS-CoV-2 Variants

Ezgi Hacisuleyman et al.

Summary: Despite evidence of vaccine efficacy, two fully vaccinated individuals developed mild symptoms of Covid-19 and were infected with variants of SARS-CoV-2. Sequencing of the virus isolates revealed novel mutations, highlighting the potential risk of illness post-vaccination and subsequent infection with variant virus. Efforts to prevent, diagnose, and characterize variants in vaccinated individuals are crucial.

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and hesitancy in low- and middle-income countries

Julio S. Solis Arce et al.

Summary: The acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines in LMICs is higher compared to the United States and Russia, with a focus on personal protection and concerns about side effects. Healthcare workers are the most trusted sources of guidance in LMICs for COVID-19 vaccines, suggesting that prioritizing vaccine distribution to these countries could help advance global immunization coverage.

Covid-19 Breakthrough Infections in Vaccinated Health Care Workers

Moriah Bergwerk et al.

Summary: Among fully vaccinated health care workers, breakthrough infections with SARS-CoV-2 were correlated with neutralizing antibody titers during the peri-infection period. Most breakthrough infections were mild or asymptomatic, although persistent symptoms did occur.

Inhaled bronchodilators use and clinical course of adult inpatients with Covid-19 pneumonia in Spain: A retrospective cohort study

Elena Villamanan et al.

Summary: In this study, the association between inhaled bronchodilator use and length of stay in hospitalized Covid-19 patients was evaluated. The results suggest that the use of inhaled bronchodilators is not significantly associated with patient improvement or reduced mortality in Covid-19 cases. More research is needed to fill the evidence gap for this new indication.

Any Role of High-Dose Vitamin C for Septic Shock in 2021?

Ankita Agarwal et al.

Summary: There is a lack of sufficient evidence to support routine vitamin C supplementation in patients with sepsis or septic shock, despite potential deficiency in critically ill patients. Ongoing studies on high-dose vitamin C administration in sepsis and coronavirus disease 2019 may provide more insights in the future.
