Hyaluronan homeostasis and its role in pain and muscle stiffness

Adam Amir et al.

Summary: Hyaluronan (HA) is an important component in the human body, mainly found in the skeleton, connective tissue, and muscles. It functions as a lubricant and shock absorber under physiological conditions and is involved in the modulation of nociception and inflammation. This study aims to understand the role of HA in muscles and fascia, as well as its synthesis, degradation, and clearance processes in local tissues.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy on pain and foot functions in subjects with chronic plantar fasciitis: systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Haimanot Melese et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes evidence on the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for individuals with chronic plantar fasciitis and indicates a moderate confirmation for improving pain and foot function in these patients. It suggests that extracorporeal shock wave therapy could be a promising rehabilitation intervention for chronic plantar fasciitis.

Dose-Dependent Pain and Pain Radiation after Chemical Stimulation of the Thoracolumbar Fascia and Multifidus Muscle: A Single-Blinded, Cross-Over Study Revealing a Higher Impact of Fascia Stimulation

Simon Vogel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dose-dependency of pain responses in deep tissues induced by injections of hypertonic saline. The results showed that injections into the fascia resulted in higher peak-pain, longer pain durations, and larger pain areas compared to intramuscular injections. The pain response was 2-3 times higher for 200 µL injections compared to 50 µL injections. However, increasing the injection volume to 800 µL did not further increase the pain areas. The results suggest that the fascia plays an important role in non-specific low back pain.

Fascia Mobility, Proprioception, and Myofascial Pain

Helene M. Langevin

Summary: Fasciae are integral to the musculoskeletal system but are often overlooked. The mobility of fasciae is crucial for musculoskeletal function and may be linked to proprioception and myofascial pain, though these relationships remain largely unexplored. Understanding these connections could lead to improved care for individuals suffering from musculoskeletal pain.

Summary: The fascia is a dynamic and complex network of connective tissue composed of different types of cells and nervous fibers, each component playing a specific role in the fascial system and responding to stimuli in different ways. Understanding the microscopic anatomy of fascia can help elucidate its physiological and pathological characteristics, and aid in identifying appropriate treatment strategies.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) and medication therapy in alleviating pain in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain. The results suggest that rESWT may be as effective as medication therapy in reducing pain, and no severe adverse events were observed.
