Brain metastases in metastatic cancer: a review of recent advances in systemic therapies

Ariane Steindl et al.

Summary: Several next-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown high intracranial efficacy in patients with asymptomatic disease. There is ongoing discussion about the need for local therapies in patients with asymptomatic BM and the availability of systemic therapy with high intracranial efficacy. Further studies focusing on brain metastases and specific endpoints in registered trials are needed to determine the role of systemic monotherapies for patients with BM.

Role of radiotherapy in the management of brain metastases of NSCLC - Decision criteria in clinical routine

Markus Glatzer et al.

Summary: European radiation oncology experts tend to recommend whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) for symptomatic patients not suitable for radiosurgery or fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy when managing brain metastases of NSCLC. Despite the results of the QUARTZ trial, WBRT is still widely used among European radiation oncology experts.

Management of multiple brain metastases: a patterns of care survey within the German Society for Radiation Oncology

Johannes Kraft et al.

Summary: The treatment of brain metastases is undergoing a paradigm shift, with whole brain radiotherapy still being the preferred option for multiple BM, while the use of hippocampal avoidance and stereotactic radiotherapy is still debated. Further research and prospective trials are needed to align evolving concepts with proper evidence and update guidelines.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer: access to palliative care, emergency room visits and hospital deaths

Peter Strang et al.

Summary: Compared to COPD patients, those with lung cancer have greater access to specialized palliative care services, which in turn reduces the need for emergency room visits and hospital admissions.

Overall survival after initial radiotherapy for brain metastases; a population based study of 2140 patients with non-small cell lung cancer

Astrid Telhaug Karlsson et al.

Summary: Brain metastases occur in about 30% of non-small cell lung cancer patients, with guidelines recommending more frequent use of stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT). Studies show that SRT leads to better overall survival compared to whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) in this patient population.

Health care utilization at end of life among patients with lung or pancreatic cancer. Comparison between two Swedish cohorts

Helena Ullgren et al.

Summary: The study revealed an increase in several aspects of intensity of care at the end-of-life, stressing the need for further exploration of the optimal organization of end-of-life care. The results indicate fragmentation of care and the necessity to better organize and coordinate care for vulnerable patients.

Summary: Brain metastases significantly impact patients with advanced extracranial malignancies, but their incidence remains poorly described. Recent studies have shown the viability of using claims data for epidemiologic investigations of brain metastases.
