Mitigation Strategies of Air Pollutants for Mechanical Ventilated Livestock and Poultry Housing-A Review

Li Guo et al.

Summary: The fast development of large-scale intensive animal husbandry has caused an increase in atmospheric pollution. It is crucial to develop strategies to mitigate this pollution and promote sustainable agricultural production. This paper summarizes various strategies for reducing air pollutants and purifying air in livestock and poultry housing, and discusses potential optimization and other technologies.

Transmembrane chemical absorption technology for ammonia recovery from wastewater: A critical review

Irene Gonzalez-Salgado et al.

Summary: Technologies for recovering nitrogen from wastewater for alternative fertilizer production have gained global attention. Transmembrane chemical absorption, using hydrophobic membrane contactors, is a promising process for recovering ammonia from wastewater to produce ammonium-based products. However, challenges such as wastewater pretreatment, membrane fouling, and wetting need to be addressed in order to fully utilize this technology.

Ammonia recovery from human urine as liquid fertilizers in hollow fiber membrane contactor: Effects of permeate chemistry

Mekdimu Mezemir Damtie et al.

Summary: The study investigated the recovery of ammonium fertilizers from human urine using liquid/liquid membrane contactor, with findings showing that the chemistry of the permeate side is a major factor affecting ammonia mass transfer. Sulfuric acid was found to be slightly better in capturing ammonia, and increasing acid concentration did not necessarily increase ammonia extraction tendency. The best operating pH for extracting ammonia for fertilizer purposes varied for different acid types.

Effect of Acid Flow Rate, Membrane Surface Area, and Capture Solution on the Effectiveness of Suspended GPM Systems to Recover Ammonia

Maria Soto-Herranz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of NH3-N concentration, membrane surface area, acid flux, and type of capture solution on ammonia recovery in a suspended GPM system through experiments. The results showed a direct relationship between the amount of NH3 captured and NH3-N concentration and membrane surface area, as well as the effectiveness of using chilled water as a capture solution for achieving high NH3 recovery rates.

Ammonia emissions from different pig production scales and their temporal variations in the North China Plain

Yubo Cao et al.

Summary: Pig production systems in China are shifting from small to industrial scale, with significant variation in NH3 emissions among farms, where sow farms are identified as the greatest source of ammonia emission. Regardless of farm scale, higher NH3 emission rates were observed in summer.

Study of the operational parameters in the hollow fibre liquid-liquid membrane contactors process for ammonia valorisation as liquid fertiliser

M. Reig et al.

Summary: The transformation from WWTPs to resources recovery plants require the development of specific technologies for selective recovery, such as the promising HF-LLMC technology for N-recovery. Testing different operational parameters, it was found that a one-step configuration using two vertical membrane contactors in series could achieve over 95% ammonia recovery, which can be used to produce liquid fertilisers for irrigation and promote circular economy in urban WWTPs.

Improved anaerobic digestion of swine manure by simultaneous ammonia recovery using gas-permeable membranes

I. Gonzalez-Garcia et al.

Summary: Removal of NH3 using gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology can improve AD process performance and biogas production. The reductions in TAN and FA levels by GPM system positively impact both the quality and quantity of the biogas produced by AD of swine manure. Additionally, ammonia nitrogen recovery in the form of ammonium sulphate further enhances the benefits of the AD-GPM configuration.

Pilot Plant for the Capture of Ammonia from the Atmosphere of Pig and Poultry Farms Using Gas-Permeable Membrane Technology

Maria Soto-Herranz et al.

Summary: Gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology shows promise in reducing NH3 emissions from livestock housing, with NH3 recovery rates varying based on NH3 concentration and seasonal differences. Higher ventilation frequency in summer months led to lower NH3 capture efficiency compared to winter months.

A critical review of ammonia recovery from anaerobic digestate of organic wastes via stripping

Advait Palakodeti et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a mature technology that converts organic waste into biogas, but the released ammonia may have inhibitory effects, necessitating its recovery. Gas-liquid stripping is a technology to recover ammonia, but research on its application to anaerobic digestate of organic wastes is limited. Further research could focus on the effect of digestate composition on ammonia recovery and the impact of stripping gas on ammonia removal.
