Exemplar Mixtures for Studying Complex Mixture Effects in Practical Chemical Separations

David S. Sholl et al.

Summary: This paper suggests that research communities for specific chemical separations should develop well-defined exemplar mixtures to bridge the gap between fundamental studies and practical applications. The paper provides a hierarchical framework of chemical mixtures and gives examples, concluding with four recommendations for accelerating the development of innovative separations strategies.

Sorption-inducedpolymer rearrangement: approaches from molecular modeling

Dylan M. Anstine et al.

Summary: Polymeric adsorbents have gained attention due to their tunable sorption properties, membrane structure, and cost consciousness. However, uptake of adsorbates can induce membrane structural rearrangement, affecting the performance metrics of polymeric membranes, with molecular simulation methods showing potential in predicting membrane properties.

Enabling experimental characterization and prediction of ternary mixed-gas sorption in polymers: C2H6/CO2/CH4 in PIM-1

Eleonora Ricci et al.

Summary: A new experimental protocol was designed to measure sorption of ternary gas mixtures in polymer membranes for the first time. The results showed competitive sorption effects in all gas mixtures analyzed, with the presence of C2H6 in the mixture reducing the sorption of both CH4 and CO2 to a similar extent. The experimental data validated predictions of the Non-Equilibrium Lattice Fluid (NELF) model, demonstrating its reliability in assessing mixed-gas sorption even in complex scenarios.

Molecular characterization of polyOAPS-imide isomer hyper-cross-linked membranes: Free-volume morphologies and sorption isotherms for CH4 and CO2

Sylvie Neyertz et al.

Summary: PolyPOSS-imides are hybrid hyper-cross-linked networks based on POSS cages, with OAPS replacing POSS to improve resistance and presenting different structures. At 35 degrees C, the adsorption performance follows the order of paraOAPS > metaOAPS > orthoOAPS > POSS and PMDA > 6FDA.

Summary: The study investigated the potential of polyPOSS-imide membranes for purifying hydrogen from coke gas, with tubular single-channel and multi-channel membranes fabricated using POSS nanostructures and 6FDA. Gas separation performance was tested with single gas and quaternary mixtures, showing high H-2 permeance and suitable selectivity. Results suggest promising potential for upscaling polyPOSS-imide membranes for H-2 upgrading.

Sorption and Diffusion of Methane, Carbon Dioxide, and Their Mixture in Amorphous Polyethylene at High Pressures and Temperatures

Yafan Yang et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the sorption and transport properties of CH4 and CO2 in amorphous polyethylene. The results showed that the uptake and diffusion coefficients of methane and carbon dioxide generally increased with pressure, and the sorption selectivity of CO2/CH4 decreased with increasing pressure and temperature. Additionally, the mobility of methane in the presence of polyethylene was found to be higher than pure methane at high pressures, while the opposite trend was observed for carbon dioxide.

An automated multi-component gas adsorption system (MC GAS)

Danny Shade et al.

Summary: The knowledge gap on adsorption of complex mixtures in the literature compared to single component data is a persistent obstacle in developing accurate process models for adsorption separations. Collecting mixed gas adsorption data is urgently needed for better understanding of adsorbent systems in diverse adsorption applications. Current predictive theories based on pure component adsorption experiments often fail to capture the behavior of complex, non-ideal systems, making the automation of the volumetric instrument for measurement of mixed gas adsorption isotherms crucial for rapid collection of high-quality mixture adsorption data.

Towards a systematic determination of multicomponent gas separation with membranes: the case of CO2/CH4 in cellulose acetates

Eleonora Ricci et al.

Summary: This study utilized the NELF model and ST model to describe and predict gas separation behavior of membranes, particularly focusing on CO2/CH4 separation. Experimental results showed that the presence of CO2 caused strong competitive exclusion of CH4, enhancing solubility selectivity of the membrane. Additionally, the study found that under multicomponent conditions, low perm-selectivity was due to a decrease in diffusivity-selectivity.

High-temperature molecular screening of hybrid polyOAPS-imide networks based on octa(aminophenyl)silsesquioxane for increased thermomechanical resistance

Sylvie Neyertz et al.

Summary: A new family of hybrid hyper-cross-linked thin films has been developed, which combines inorganic POSS cages with short organic imides. By replacing the aliphatic arms of the initial POSS precursor with a phenyl derivative, the thermal resistance of the polymer networks was significantly improved. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to efficiently screen and optimize the structures of the polymers, which were then tested under high temperatures and pressures to confirm their improved properties.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the impact of introducing PA-terminated OAPS on the shape memory properties of polyimides, finding that it acted as both a plasticizer and a rigid cage structure, affecting the strain and shape recovery values of the resulting composite materials. The shape memory polyimide composites exhibited high strain and recovery values, along with multiple shape memory effects and cycle stability.
