Metabolites of the oral microbiome: important mediators of multikingdom interactions

Abdelahhad Barbour et al.

Summary: More than 700 bacterial species live in the oral cavity, producing a wide range of bioactive metabolites crucial for oral health maintenance. Next-generation sequencing has revolutionized our understanding of the oral microbiome and its significance in health and disease. However, research on unique oral microbial metabolites is still limited. This article discusses the importance of microbial metabolites in oral health and disease, as well as the potential of genomics and genome mining in discovering novel bioactive metabolites from the human oral microbiome.
