A Review of Sensors and Biosensors Modified with Conducting Polymers and Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Used in Electrochemical Detection of Amino Acids: Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, and Tryptophan

Ancuta Dinu et al.

Summary: In recent years, the development of sensors and biosensors has become a hot topic in interdisciplinary research, attracting researchers from various fields. This paper synthesizes the most relevant studies on the construction and functioning of versatile devices, as well as electrochemical sensors and biosensors. It focuses on the role and importance of the amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan in the central nervous system, and the application of conductor polymers and molecularly imprinted polymers in achieving electrochemical sensors and biosensors. The paper also analyzes the performance of sensors and biosensors developed so far for amino acid detection.

Pharmacologic Ascorbic Acid as Early Therapy for Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Dagan Coppock et al.

Summary: This randomized controlled trial investigated the impact of ascorbic acid on early clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients. The results showed that ascorbic acid may be beneficial in reducing the use of supplemental oxygen, bronchodilators, and shortening the length of hospital stay in hospitalized patients. However, the beneficial effects of ascorbic acid diminished over the course of hospitalization. Future research should focus on the potential early benefits of ascorbic acid in hospitalized patients.

Potentiometric Biosensing of Ascorbic Acid, Uric Acid, and Cysteine in Microliter Volumes Using Miniaturized Nanoporous Gold Electrodes

Christopher J. Freeman et al.

Summary: Potentiometric redox sensing is a relatively inexpensive and passive method for evaluating the overall redox state of complex biological and environmental solutions. This study focuses on the fabrication of miniaturized nanoporous gold electrodes for potentiometric redox sensing of biologically relevant redox molecules in microliter volumes. Results show that the redox potential of solutions containing biologically relevant concentrations of ascorbic acid, uric acid, and cysteine is strongly influenced by ascorbic acid at NPG electrodes.

In situ Voltammetry Determination of Ascorbic and Oxalic Acids in Juices and Fruits Using an Electrode Modified by a Gold-Palladium Bimetallic System

L. G. Shaidarova et al.

Summary: A new voltammetric method for the determination of ascorbic and oxalic acids using a gold-palladium modified electrode has been developed, allowing for rapid analysis of these acids in citrus fruits and orange juices without sample preparation. The method provides comparable results to traditional iodometry and permanganometry methods, making it a promising alternative for fruit juice analysis.

Bleeding tendency and ascorbic acid requirements: systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials

Philippe P. Hujoel et al.

Summary: Based on controlled clinical trials, the recommended daily intake of vitamin C might be too low, leading to manifestations of microvascular fragility such as gingival bleeding tendency and retinal hemorrhaging. Adequate vitamin C supplementation can reduce gingival bleeding tendency, but the effect is unclear when baseline plasma vitamin C levels are higher.

Khalid Al Sulaiman et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of using low-dose ascorbic acid as adjunctive therapy in critically ill COVID-19 patients. While ascorbic acid did not show mortality benefits, it was associated with a lower incidence of thrombosis. Further research is needed to validate these findings.
