Recent advancements in optical biosensors for cancer detection

Baljinder Kaur et al.

Summary: Optical biosensors offer rapid, real-time, portable detection with low limits and high sensitivity for diagnosing various types of cancer. Recent advancements focus on the design of biosensors utilizing resonance, scattering, chemiluminescence, luminescence, and other techniques, as well as the development of two-dimensional materials and microfabrication technologies. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and terahertz waves show promise for high specificity detection, while optical fiber platforms may drive the rapid development of biosensors due to their advantages in electromagnetic interference, size, multiplexing, and remote sensing capabilities.

Identification and visualisation of microplastics via PCA to decode Raman spectrum matrix towards imaging

Cheng Fang et al.

Summary: This study compares two decoding approaches for visualising microplastics and nanoplastics via Raman imaging. The first approach maps Raman intensity at characteristic peaks when standard spectra are available, while the second approach uses PCA to decode the spectrum matrix for complex samples without standard spectra. The PCA-based algorithm shows advantages in analysing and identifying microplastics from other materials.

A colorimetric nano-biosensor for simultaneous detection of prevalent cancers using unamplified cell-free ribonucleic acid biomarkers

Hamidreza Mollasalehi et al.

Summary: The study developed a rapid and non-invasive nano-biosensing method for early screening of common lethal cancers. It targeted circulating microRNA biomarkers in prevalent cancers using Au-nanoprobes and external biomarkers, allowing direct visual detection of cancerous cell lines and confirmation through spectroscopy analysis. The method has a detection limit of 1 ng/μL, making it a simple platform for cancer prognosis and diagnosis.

The potential of SERS as an AST methodology in clinical settings

Ota Samek et al.

Summary: The ability to rapidly and reliably identify and characterize microorganisms from tiny sample volumes is crucial in the diagnostics of microbial infections. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has shown great potential in providing a rapid and accurate method for diagnosing infections, with a focus on bacteria. SERS spectra of bacteria, generated from secreted metabolic substances, offer a valuable tool in differentiating cell types and physiological states, and have the potential for routine point-of-care tests in clinical settings.
