Effects of the Gestagen Levonorgestrel in a Life Cycle Test with Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Matthias Teigeler et al.

Summary: The amount of pharmaceuticals entering the aquatic environment through municipal and hospital waste water is increasing, posing potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Exposure to levonorgestrel can alter the sex ratio of zebrafish, especially at higher concentrations.

Fate and behavior of progestogens in activated sludge treatment: Kinetics and transformation products

Alexander Weizel et al.

Summary: Previous studies have demonstrated the high ecotoxicological potential of progestogens on aquatic organisms, with some compounds showing incomplete removal in wastewater treatment. Aerobic lab-scale experiments showed fast removal of most progestogens after 48 hours, but some compounds had slower degradation rates, hinting at limited removal in full-scale WWTPs. High-resolution mass spectrometry revealed numerous transformation products, showing complex degradation pathways for progestogens in wastewater treatment.

Steroid hormones in the aquatic environment

J. O. Ojoghoro et al.

Summary: Steroid hormones are crucial natural hormones that regulate physiological processes in vertebrates; both natural and synthetic steroid hormones have been identified as widespread aquatic contaminants; experiments have shown that even at extremely low concentrations, steroid hormones can adversely affect reproduction in aquatic vertebrates.

Inhibition of swim bladder inflation in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos following exposure to select pharmaceuticals alone and in combination

Z. Pandelides et al.

Summary: This study utilized Japanese medaka fish embryos to assess the effects of pharmaceutical contaminants on early fish development. Exposure to various contaminants led to swim bladder inflation failure and mortality. Combinatorial exposures of different compounds resulted in significant impacts on swim bladder inflation success in larval medaka.

Reproductive potential of mosquitofish is reduced by the masculinizing effect of a synthetic progesterone, gestodene: Evidence from morphology, courtship behaviour, ovary histology, sex hormones and gene expressions

Shanduo Chen et al.

Summary: Exposure to the progestin gestodene can lead to masculinization in female mosquitofish, affecting their body weight, morphology, and courtship behavior. While oocyte development seems unaffected, the presence of spermatogonia in the ovary suggests a potential disruption in reproductive processes. Increased testosterone levels and decreased estradiol levels were associated with these masculinizing effects, driven by upregulation of androgen receptor genes.

Norethindrone causes cellular and hepatic injury in zebrafish by compromising the metabolic processes associated with antioxidant defence: Insights from metabolomics

Xiaolan Wang et al.

Summary: Exposure to progestin norethindrone (NET) weakened antioxidant defence and caused liver injury in zebrafish, possibly by disrupting metabolic processes responsible for antioxidant defence. NET may undermine antioxidant defence by suppressing Nrf2-ARE and NF-kappa B pathways, indicating more detrimental impacts on the fitness of aquatic organisms than previously thought.

Summary: This study discusses the impact of different forms of hormonal contraception and progestins on side effects, reproductive cancers, and susceptibility to infectious diseases. The research highlights the lack of study on progestins used in hormonal contraception and emphasizes the need for greater understanding of these topics.
