Diabetes and Ramadan: Practical guidelines 2021

Mohamed Hassanein et al.

Summary: Proper guidance and care are important for people with diabetes who choose to fast during Ramadan. The IDF and DaR International Alliance have provided updated guidelines to improve awareness and management of diabetes during fasting, addressing different scenarios and highlighting the need for future research.

Mitigation of hypoglycemia during Ramadan using the flash glucose monitoring system following dose adjustment of insulin and sulphonylurea in patients taking multiple glucose-lowering

Tarik Elhadd et al.

Summary: The study showed that structured education and adjustment of glucose-lowering medication, along with the use of the flash glucose monitoring system, can effectively mitigate the risk of hypoglycemia in patients with T2DM who fast during Ramadan.

Impact of Ramadan Diurnal Intermittent Fasting on Hypoglycemic Events in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials and Observational Studies

Dana Abdelrahim et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the scientific evidence on hypoglycemic events (HE) occurrence among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) fasting during Ramadan, as well as the effects of different moderators on HE incidence. Results showed that non-sulfonylureas hypoglycemic medications were more effective in reducing the incidence of HE, with various factors such as sex, geographical location, body indicators, season, dietary behaviors, fasting duration, time since diagnosis, and pre-fasting education associated with experiencing HE during Ramadan.

Knowledge gaps and perceptions of future research directions on management of diabetes during Ramadan fasting: An online survey of physicians

Salem A. Beshyah et al.

Summary: Most physicians identified knowledge gaps in managing high-risk diabetes patients, such as those with renal impairment or pregnancy. The main barriers to research were lack of funding and institutional interest in the subject. Future efforts should focus on large epidemiological studies or clinical trials to address these gaps.

Effect of Dosage Reduction of Hypoglycemic Multidrug Regimens on the Incidences of Acute Glycemic Complications in People With Type 2 Diabetes Who Fast During Rama?an: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Louay Y. Zaghlol et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the effect of dosage reduction of four hypoglycemic multidrug regimens on acute glycemic complications in people with type 2 diabetes who fast during Ramadan. Results showed that dosage reduction decreases the incidence of hypoglycemia without increasing the incidences of hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state.
