Impact of magnesium on bone health in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Inge Groenendijk et al.

Summary: Higher magnesium intake is positively associated with increased hip and femoral neck bone mineral density in older adults. However, more well-designed cohort studies and randomized controlled trials are needed to further confirm the relationship and whether magnesium supplementation can improve bone health. The combination of multiple bone nutrients may be necessary for optimal effects on bone health and to prevent or delay the development of osteoporosis.

Environmental Substances Associated with Osteoporosis-A Scoping Review

Hanna Elonheimo et al.

Summary: There is evidence indicating a potential link between environmental substances such as heavy metals and industrial chemicals, and osteoporosis. However, more epidemiological research is needed to further understand the relationship between health effects and exposure to these chemicals. The results of studies are inconsistent, and there is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological studies on chemical exposure.

Magnesium in Aging, Health and Diseases

Mario Barbagallo et al.

Summary: Several changes in magnesium metabolism occur with aging, including reduced magnesium intake, impaired absorption, and increased renal excretion. Mild magnesium deficiency in the elderly may present with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments, often mistaken for age-related issues. Chronic magnesium deficits can lead to increased free radical production, contributing to the development of various age-related disorders, while magnesium deficiency has been linked to numerous human diseases. Dietary adjustments and magnesium supplementation could help in preventing chronic conditions associated with aging.

Magnesium Depletion Score (MDS) Predicts Risk of Systemic Inflammation and Cardiovascular Mortality among US Adults

Lei Fan et al.

Summary: The study validated a model related to kidney reabsorption of magnesium, known as the magnesium depletion score (MDS), and found that MDS can be used to identify individuals with magnesium deficiency to reduce risks of systemic inflammation and cardiovascular disease mortality.
