Diet cost and quality using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 in adults from urban and rural areas of Mexico

Katherine Curi-Quinto et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between diet cost and quality in urban areas of Mexico, while no significant correlation was observed in rural areas. Residents in rural areas generally have higher quality diets at lower cost, with higher intake of whole grains and beans, and lower intake of Na, added sugars, and saturated fats. Factors such as living in the South, being indigenous, and having low socioeconomic status were also associated with higher quality diets. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between diet cost and quality in rural areas.

The cost of eating more sustainable diets: A nutritional and environmental diet optimisation study

Eliseu Verly-Jr et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify dietary changes in Brazil to improve nutrition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Linear programming models were used to design optimized diets meeting different sets of constraints, leading to a reduction in GHGE with a move towards diets meeting nutritional recommendations.

Toward a healthy and sustainable diet in Mexico: where are we and how can we move forward?

Anali Castellanos-Gutierrez et al.

Summary: The study found that Mexican adults have a diet that deviates from a healthy pattern, with excessive intake of grains, dairy, sugar, and animal-based proteins, and insufficient intake of vegetables and fruits. Therefore, a healthy and sustainable reference diet tailored to the Mexican population was proposed based on these findings.

The global and regional costs of healthy and sustainable dietary patterns: a modelling study

Marco Springmann et al.

Summary: This study estimated the costs of healthy and sustainable diets worldwide, finding that these diet patterns could be up to 22-34% lower in cost in high-income countries compared to current diets, but at least 18-29% more expensive in low-income countries. By reducing food waste, fostering favorable socioeconomic development scenarios, and fully accounting for diet-related costs, the affordability of these dietary patterns can be improved in future projections.

Adoption of healthy and sustainable diets in Mexico does not imply higher expenditure on food

Carolina Batis et al.

Summary: The study found that in Mexico, adopting healthier and more sustainable diets does not necessarily mean higher food expenditures. The cost of the EAT-Lancet healthy reference diet was lower compared to the Mexican dietary guidelines and current food intake, primarily due to the lower amount of animal protein sources, sugar-sweetened beverages and discretionary foods in the former.

Food systems are responsible for a third of global anthropogenic GHG emissions

M. Crippa et al.

Summary: Data on GHG emissions from the global food system are often scattered and unavailable, but EDGAR-FOOD provides a consistent database from 1990 to 2015. The largest contributions to food-system emissions come from agriculture and supply chain activities, representing 34% of total global GHG emissions.
