Lentinan Supplementation Protects the Gut-Liver Axis and Prevents Steatohepatitis: The Role of Gut Microbiota Involved

Xiaoying Yang et al.

Summary: β-glucan, an active ingredient in mushrooms, can improve NAFLD and gut microbiota dysbiosis in NAFLD mice induced by a high-fat diet, suggesting its potential use in mitigating NAFLD by modulating the microbiota-gut-liver axis.

Inflammatory bowel disease is associated with higher dementia risk: a nationwide longitudinal study

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found a significant association between IBD and the development of dementia, with IBD patients having a higher risk of dementia at an earlier age. The risk of developing Alzheimer's dementia was particularly increased among IBD patients. Research is needed to further explore the relationship between IBD and dementia.

High-fiber diet mitigates maternal obesity-induced cognitive and social dysfunction in the offspring via gut-brain axis

Xiaoning Liu et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity has been found to be associated with lower cognition and sociality in children. The study demonstrated a causal relationship between microbiota and behavioral changes, and showed that microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids can alleviate behavioral deficits in offspring of obese dams. High dietary fiber intake may be a promising intervention for maternal obesity-induced cognitive and social dysfunctions.

β-Glucan from Lentinula edodes prevents cognitive impairments in high-fat diet-induced obese mice: involvement of colon-brain axis

Wei Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that both short-term and long-term supplementation of L. edodes beta-glucan prevented gut microbial composition shifts induced by a high-fat diet. Long-term supplementation also prevented cognitive impairments induced by the high-fat diet, improved synaptic ultrastructure, reduced neuroinflammation, and ameliorated brain-derived neurotrophic factor deficits in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Additionally, beta-glucan supplementation increased mucosal thickness, upregulated tight junction protein expression, decreased plasma LPS levels, and inhibited proinflammatory macrophage accumulation in the colon of high-fat diet-fed mice.

Sustained NMDA receptor hypofunction impairs brain-derived neurotropic factor signalling in the PFC, but not in the hippocampus, and disturbs PFC-dependent cognition in mice

Sara R. Tanqueiro et al.

Summary: The study found that prolonged NMDA-R hypofunction induced by subchronic PCP treatment impairs long-term potentiation and the facilitatory effect of BDNF in the PFC of adult mice. Moreover, TrkB-FL receptor expression is decreased in the PFC of these animals. These changes were not present in the hippocampus and are paralleled by impaired performance in PFC-dependent cognitive tests in mice treated with PCP.

Dietary Curdlan Enhances Bifidobacteria and Reduces Intestinal Inflammation in Mice

Shafaque Rahman et al.

Summary: This study found that intake of curdlan can reduce weight loss and colonic inflammation in mice, without inducing general microbiota community changes, but can increase a specific type of Bifidobacterium. Additionally, curdlan can also induce global changes in the healthy human intestinal microbiota.

Summary: The study found that increasing whole grain intake was associated with reduced increases in waist circumference, fasting glucose concentration, and systolic blood pressure, while increasing refined grain intake was associated with increased waist circumference and less decline in triglyceride concentration.

Lactobacillus paracasei modulates the gut microbiota and improves inflammation in type 2 diabetic rats

Zhu Zeng et al.

Summary: The study showed that treatment with L. paracasei NL41 significantly improved the inflammatory status of T2D rats, reduced the levels of inflammatory markers, and protected gut barrier function. Furthermore, NL41 altered the gut microbiota structure and enriched beneficial microorganisms, indicating a close relationship between the amelioration of inflammation and key species of the gut microbiota.
