Global seasonal forecasts of marine heatwaves

Michael G. Jacox et al.

Summary: Research shows that the onset, intensity, and duration of marine heatwaves are often predictable, with skillful forecasts possible from 1 to 12 months in advance depending on region, season, and climate mode status. Setting decision thresholds based on the probability of MHW occurrence can promote climate resilience in global marine ecosystems.

Sub-Regional Marine Heat Waves in the Mediterranean Sea From Observations: Long-Term Surface Changes, Sub-Surface and Coastal Responses

Melanie Juza et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of marine heat waves (MHWs) in the different sub-regions of the Mediterranean. It reveals that MHW indices have dramatically increased over the last four decades, with an unprecedented acceleration rate in recent years. The study also examines the propagation of MHW events into the ocean interior, highlighting sub-regional and seasonal variability in the sub-surface ocean response. Additionally, the study explores extremely warm events in coastal waters and their varying response from surface to sub-surface.

Effects of Current and Future Summer Marine Heat Waves on Posidonia oceanica: Plant Origin Matters?

Patrizia Stipcich et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of current and future marine heat waves on the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica and found that biochemical variables can serve as good indicators of seagrass heat stress. The study also highlighted the importance of the thermal environment in determining the tolerance of plants to heat.

Complex networks of marine heatwaves reveal abrupt transitions in the global ocean

Lisandro Benedetti-Cecchi

Summary: The research found that marine heatwaves have reached a dangerous tipping point, transitioning from highly synchronized preindustrial MHWs to the more extreme but less coherent warming events we experience today. This loose spatiotemporal organization persists under a reduced emission scenario of RCP 2.6, while a second abrupt transition towards a permanent state of highly synchronized MHWs is foreseen by 2075 under a business-as-usual RCP 8.5 scenario.

Surviving Heatwaves: Thermal Experience Predicts Life and Death in a Southern Ocean Diatom

Toby Samuels et al.

Summary: Extreme environmental fluctuations like marine heatwaves can have devastating effects on ecosystem health and functioning, but recent studies show that populations have variable tolerance to them. Factors like genetic variation, thermal experience, and heatwave intensity contribute to population responses. Experimentally simulating heatwaves on diatoms revealed that hotter and longer heatwaves increased mortality and slowed growth, with intraspecific variation in post-heatwave growth rates. These findings highlight the potential of Southern Ocean diatoms to tolerate future MHWs.

Prokaryotic responses to a warm temperature anomaly in northeast subarctic Pacific waters

Sachia J. Traving et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that marine heat waves can lead to shifts in prokaryotic community structures, with taxa considered free-living and chemoautotrophic prevailing under these unusual conditions. This shift may have implications for ocean productivity and organic carbon conversion and export.
