Factors Associated with Domestic Violence in Rural Bangladesh

Md Ahshanul Haque et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine the factors associated with women's experience of domestic violence in rural Bangladesh. The results show that factors such as age at marriage, lack of support from household members, visit from NGO health professionals, number of children, and women's decision-making power at the household level are significantly associated with reporting of domestic violence. Variations in Emotional, Sexual, and Physical Intimate Partner Violence Among Women in Uganda: A Multilevel Analysis

Prince M. Amegbor et al.

Summary: Evidence shows that a significant proportion of ever-partnered women suffer from intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated by male partners. The prevalence of IPV in sub-Saharan African countries is higher than global estimates. Women's educational status is a significant predictor of all forms of IPV, while alcohol abuse is a significant determinant of men perpetrating all types of IPV. Regional differences account for approximately 5%, 8%, and 2% of the variance in emotional, sexual, and physical violence, respectively.

Summary: This study found that in rural Bangladesh, higher levels of female authority within the family were associated with lower frequency of MMV against women, compared to families with absolute male authority. The study also revealed that psychological abuse, physical attack, and sexual coercion were more common in families with absolute male authority than in families with egalitarian/fair female authority.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Women's Past-Year Physical IPV Perpetration and Victimization in Tanzania

Bianka M. Reese et al.

Summary: Recent study in Tanzania found that approximately 1.5% of women reported perpetrating intimate partner violence (IPV) in the past 12 months, while 35% reported being victims during the same time period. Risk factors for IPV perpetration and victimization included past history of IPV, economic factors, decision-making autonomy, and attitudes towards violence. The findings suggest that both perpetration and victimization of IPV among women may result from a combination of factors, emphasizing the importance of addressing power dynamics and attitudes in prevention efforts.

The study also found that younger men, those with gender inequitable attitudes, history of childhood trauma, multiple sexual partners, and alcohol use were more likely to report IPV perpetration in the past 3 months. Furthermore, younger women, those with low levels of education, and reported food shortages were more likely to report experiencing IPV in the past 3 months.

Trauma Exposure and Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Pregnant Women in Liberia

Katelyn M. Sileo et al.

Summary: Intimate partner violence is a significant issue among young, pregnant women in Liberia, with exposure to traumatic events like war-related trauma and community violence being associated with increased risk. Mental health, attachment style, and attitudes towards violence were found to mediate this relationship, highlighting the importance of screening and intervention during pregnancy. This study contributes to our understanding of how long-term exposure to trauma can lead to elevated rates of IPV in Liberia and underscores the need for trauma-informed approaches to address violence against women.
