Artificial intelligence to predict West Nile virus outbreaks with eco-climatic drivers

Zia Farooq et al.

Summary: The study used advanced artificial intelligence to analyze the eco-climatic drivers of West Nile virus outbreaks in Europe. The research found that anomalies in summer/spring temperatures, lower water availability index (NDWI), and drier winter conditions were the main determinants of WNV outbreaks across Europe. The AI-based framework showed high discriminatory power in predicting WNV-endemic areas and can be used for timely surveillance and control measures.

Coronavirus seasonality, respiratory infections and weather

G. L. Nichols et al.

Summary: The study found that coronavirus infections in England and Wales have a seasonal distribution with a winter peak, occurring more frequently when temperatures are low, radiation is low, sunlight is less, and humidity is high. Increased measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19 may be necessary in winter months to account for these factors.

The adverse health effects associated with drought in Africa

Taherah Asmall et al.

Summary: The systematic review of epidemiological research on the health effects of drought in Africa from 2012 to 2019 revealed associations with adverse nutritional health, diseases from water contamination, and changes in health behaviors. Limited evidence was found for various health outcomes, with key areas identified for further research and considerations for interventions.

Seasonal Malaria Vaccination with or without Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention

Daniel Chandramohan et al.

Summary: Malaria control remains a challenge in many parts of the Sahel and sub-Sahel regions of Africa. The study showed that the RTS,S/AS01(E) vaccine was noninferior to chemoprevention, and the combination of these interventions resulted in significantly lower incidence of uncomplicated malaria, severe malaria, and death from malaria compared to either intervention alone.

Climate change and infectious disease in Europe: Impact, projection and adaptation

Jan C. Semenza et al.

Summary: Europeans are facing both direct and indirect impacts of climate change, with climate-sensitive infectious diseases posing a significant concern for epidemic potential. The European Union aims to support climate change health policy to better prepare for future health security threats following the traumatic COVID-19 experience, with a focus on reducing risks and vulnerabilities to infectious diseases.

Mapping geographical areas at risk for tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) by analysing bulk tank milk from Swedish dairy cattle herds for the presence of TBE virus-specific antibodies

Gunilla Blomqvist et al.

Summary: This study presents data on the geographical distribution of TBEV in Sweden based on antibody analysis of bulk tank milk from dairy herds, showing a largely consistent distribution with reported human TBE cases. The use of bulk tank milk for serological examination might be a useful method for surveillance to identify TBEV presence in different regions.

Seasonal Malaria Vaccination with or without Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention

Daniel Chandramohan et al.

Summary: This study found that seasonal vaccination with RTS,S/AS01(E) was as effective as chemoprevention in preventing uncomplicated malaria, but combining the two interventions significantly reduced the incidence of uncomplicated malaria, severe malaria, and death from malaria compared to using either intervention alone.
