Phylogenomics Reveals Ancient Gene Tree Discordance in the Amphibian Tree of Life

Paul M. Hime et al.

Summary: This study provides a phylogenomic perspective on amphibian relationships by developing a taxon-specific Anchored Hybrid Enrichment protocol targeting conserved exons. It clarifies relationships among amphibians and identifies gene tree-species tree conflict. The results strongly support amphibian monophyly and a sister relationship between frogs and salamanders, with a surprisingly younger timescale for crown and ordinal amphibian diversification.

Reproductive Ecology of Rhinophrynus dorsalis (Anura: Rhinophrynidae) in Mexico

Daniel F. Hughes et al.

Summary: The reproductive ecology of Rhinophrynus dorsalis is more similar to distantly related burrowing anurans than their close aquatic relatives in Pipidae. The study found that male and female body sizes were similar, but females attained larger maximum sizes. Reproduction timing was variable, with most breeding beginning in May following heavy rains, and clutch size was positively correlated with female body size.

Characterisation of a skin secretion with adhesive properties in the ground frog Eupsophus vertebralis (Alsodidae)

Elkin Y. Suarez-Villota et al.

Summary: This study documented the sticky skin secretion released by the Patagonian frog Eupsophus vertebralis under stress, which contained a high percentage of proteins and exhibited strong adhesive properties on various materials. The shear strength of this secretion was comparable to certain industrial adhesives, suggesting its potential biotechnological value in practical applications.
