Improving Li Plating Behaviors Through Cu-Sn Alloy-Coated Current Collector for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anodes

Yifeng Cheng et al.

Summary: An alloy anode with good reversibility of lithium plating/stripping and long cycling stability was successfully prepared using Cu-Sn alloy as the substrate, leading to a dendrite-free Li metal anode that maintained high capacity and coulombic efficiency after 300 cycles. This provides a new perspective for designing dendrite-free Li anode for next-generation high-energy density batteries.

Correlating capacity fade with film resistance loss in fast charging of lithium-ion battery

Prashant Gargh et al.

Summary: The study shows that lithium plating damages the solid electrolyte interface but reforms during relaxation, causing impedance changes in batteries. Additionally, the measured capacity loss is linearly correlated with impedance changes, suggesting impedance monitoring can be used for predicting the health status of Li-ion batteries.

Magnetohydrodynamic Control of Interfacial Degradation in Lithium-Ion Batteries for Fast Charging Applications

Abhishek Sarkar et al.

Summary: A novel method of minimizing interfacial anodic degradation in graphite materials in lithium ion batteries under fast charging conditions by applying an external magnetic field was presented, showing improved performance in experiments. The paramagnetic lithium ions under magnetic field experience a unique magnetohydrodynamic force, leading to improved ionic transport process and reduced problems at the solid-liquid interface, thereby enhancing battery performance.

Performance degradation due to anodic failure mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries

Abhishek Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study presents a mechano-chemical model for anodic degradation of nickel-manganese-cobalt/graphite cells during fast charging, discussing the influence of plating mechanisms on film resistance and predicting an increased tendency of fracture for thinner SEI film at higher charging rates. The model provides an extensive analytical framework for understanding anodic degradation mechanisms, prognosticating conditions of SEI failure, and evaluating the capacity fade and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries.

Preventing lithium plating under extremes: an untold tale of two electrodes

Amy Bohinsky et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the role of cathode-induced cell failure even when anode-centric lithium plating is prevented, and proposes pathways for future BMS algorithm development to enable Li-ion cells to operate under extremes. Operating the cell in conditions favorable to the anode may lead to cathode degradation and subsequent cell failure, indicating the importance of balanced electrode potential control.

Role of SEI layer growth in fracture probability in lithium-ion battery electrodes

Yasir Ali et al.

Summary: Understanding degradation mechanisms in batteries is crucial for eco-friendly vehicles. The formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) deteriorates battery capacity by consuming lithium ions and affecting fracture behavior. As the SEI layer grows, the stress inside active particles changes from tensile to compressive, reducing fracture probability. Additionally, the stability of SEI layers is important for alleviating electrochemical performance fade and mechanical failure probability, with smaller particles more likely to have fractured SEI layers.
