DNA Sequence-Based Identification of Fusarium: A Work in Progress

Kerry O'Donnell et al.

Summary: Accurate species-level identification of Fusarium is essential for disease diagnosis and management. However, there are challenges in identifying Fusarium due to the large number of phylogenetically distinct species, many of which are not formally described, and the limitations of morphology-based identification. To address this, research groups are working on populating databases with informative genes that can accurately identify Fusarium species and outlining best practices for DNA sequence-based identification.

Identification and Characterization of Fusarium nirenbergiae Associated with Saffron Corm Rot Disease

S. Ali Mirghasempour et al.

Summary: This study reports the first occurrence of F. nirenbergiae causing C. sativus corm rot in China and worldwide. The whole genome sequences of highly virulent F. nirenbergiae strains were obtained, contributing to the understanding of genetic diversity, genomic information, and host determination. This research provides important insights for management measures against this hazardous disease.

Fusarium and Neocosmospora Species Associated with Rot of Cactaceae and Other Succulent Plants

Sahar Kamali-Sarvestani et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized three fusarioid species recovered from ornamental succulents in Shiraz County, Iran, including F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum, and Neocosmospora falciformis. These species showed a broad host spectrum and induced different types of symptoms on inoculated plants. Additionally, this is the first report of N. falciformis as a pathogen of succulent plants worldwide.

Draft Genome Sequences of Fungi Isolated from the International Space Station during the Microbial Tracking-2 Experiment

Anna C. Simpson et al.

Summary: In the Microbial Tracking-2 study, 94 fungal strains were isolated from surfaces on the International Space Station, and their whole-genome sequences were assembled. Characterizing these draft genomes will enable the evaluation of fungal adaptation to microgravity, risks to human health and spacecraft functioning, as well as biotechnological applications of fungi.

Fusarium communeassociated with wilt and root rot disease in rice

Asmaul Husna et al.

Summary: This study identified Fusarium commune as a causal agent of wilt and root rot disease in rice, characterized by long and slender monophialides, polyphialides, and abundant chlamydospores. Pathogenicity assays showed that all the isolates produced wilt and root rot symptoms, with isolate BD019R being the most virulent. It is the first report of F. commune causing wilt and root rot disease on rice.

Taxonomic Revision of the Banana Fusarium Wilt TR4 Pathogen Is Premature

Eliana Tones Bedoya et al.

Summary: Taxonomic revisions for pathogens of crops should be based on robust evidence. However, a recent proposal to revise the taxonomy of the causative agent of Fusarium wilt on banana was found to have insufficient data support, with apparent discrepancies and errors in the published phylogenies. While not denying the authors' conclusions, it is suggested that the taxonomic changes are premature given the current state of publicly available data.
