Neutrophil extracellular traps in chronic lung disease: implications for pathogenesis and therapy

Holly R. Keir et al.

Summary: Neutrophilic inflammation plays a key role in multiple chronic lung diseases, and the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) has emerged as an important mechanism in these diseases. NETs can bind pathogens and prevent microbial dissemination, but they can also cause tissue damage and increased inflammation. Treating neutrophilic inflammation is challenging, but novel approaches to suppress NET formation or associated inflammation are being developed.

Systemic Inflammatory Biomarkers Define Specific Clusters in Patients with Bronchiectasis: A Large-Cohort Study

Xuejie Wang et al.

Summary: Differential phenotypic clusters were identified in a large cohort of bronchiectasis patients using data mining approaches. The three clusters were classified as mild, moderate, and severe based on systemic biomarkers, with severe cluster exhibiting worse disease severity and poorer outcomes. Clustering analysis proved to be a powerful tool in characterizing the complexity and heterogeneity of bronchiectasis patients.

RIBRON: The spanish Online Bronchiectasis Registry. Characterization of the First 1912 Patients

Miguel Angel Martinez-Garcia et al.

Summary: The SEPAR Spanish Bronchiectasis Registry (RIBRON) serves as a platform for collecting longitudinal data on bronchiectasis patients. A study analyzing the characteristics of 1912 adult patients diagnosed with bronchiectasis between 2015 and 2019 found that women presented with a less severe profile than men. Additionally, the study showed that women had similar infectious, radiological, and therapeutic profiles as men.

Neutrophil dysfunction in bronchiectasis: an emerging role for immunometabolism

Yan Hui Giam et al.

Summary: Bronchiectasis is a complex disease with multiple underlying causes, where neutrophilic inflammation and dysfunction play key roles. Previous therapies targeting neutrophils may not be effective enough, suggesting the need for new immune-modulating approaches to enhance bacterial clearance and reduce disease severity.

Summary: Bronchiectasis is a neutrophilic inflammatory disease, and research has shown that neutrophilic inflammation is associated with disease severity and treatment response. Studying the role of NETs in bronchiectasis can help develop new treatment strategies.

Our evolving view of neutrophils in defining the pathology of chronic lung disease

Kyle T. Mincham et al.

Summary: Neutrophils play a critical role in the immune response to infection, but their overactivation can contribute to disease pathology. In chronic lung diseases, neutrophilic inflammation is associated with worse prognosis, highlighting the need for targeted therapeutic strategies.

Phenotypic Clustering in Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis Patients: The Role of Eosinophils in Disease Severity

Xuejie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether high blood eosinophil counts could define a better phenotype in bronchiectasis patients and identified two distinct clinical phenotypes based on blood eosinophil counts. Patients above the threshold exhibited significantly better clinical outcomes, lung function, and nutritional status while showing lower systemic inflammation levels. These results contribute to better characterizing bronchiectasis patients into phenotypic profiles with clinical implications.
