Obstructive sleep apnoea and adherence to continuous positive airway therapy among Australian women

Subash S. Heraganahally et al.

Summary: This retrospective study explored the clinical characteristics, polysomnographic features, and adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy among Australian women with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The results showed that age, BMI, and hypertension were predictors of OSA presence and severity. Adherence to CPAP therapy was associated with symptomatic OSA and severe oxygen desaturation.

Insight into COVID-19's epidemiology, pathology, and treatment

Abdelmohcine Aimrane et al.

Summary: The emergence of COVID-19 has led to a focus on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of SARS-CoV-2. Our understanding of this coronavirus, which causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, is still limited. Previous research on coronaviruses provides valuable knowledge to improve our understanding of this pandemic. This review aims to provide insights into the key advances in SARS-CoV-2's epidemiology, pathophysiology, life cycle, and treatment.

Pressure adjustment is the most useful intervention for improving compliance in telemonitored patients treated with CPAP in the first 6 months of treatment

Sarah Carlier et al.

Summary: Telemonitoring for patients with CPAP treatment has become routine in some sleep labs. This study aimed to identify technical interventions associated with improved CPAP compliance in a real-life cohort of OSA patients during the first 6 months of treatment. Results showed that pressure modification was the only intervention that significantly increased CPAP compliance during the first 6 months.

Factors affecting compliance with positive airway pressure therapy in obstructive sleep apnea

Merve Ercelik et al.

Summary: The study found that factors affecting patient compliance with positive airway pressure therapy mainly include the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), levels of depression and anxiety, and comfort with the device. While there was no relationship between pulmonary function test parameters and compliance, addressing these factors can help improve treatment outcomes for patients.

The COVID-19 pandemic, heart and cardiovascular diseases: What we have learned

Zuzanna Piatek et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had a significant impact on global healthcare and economies, particularly affecting patients with cardiovascular diseases and potentially leading to more severe outcomes. The virus may directly or indirectly affect the heart and vascular system through multiple mechanisms, even triggering acute coronary syndromes, while changing treatment patterns and patient behavior in managing cardiovascular diseases due to fear of hospitalization.

A systematic review of COVID-19 and obstructive sleep apnoea

Michelle A. Miller et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the relationship between OSA and COVID-19 outcomes, finding that risk factors associated with OSA are also linked to poor COVID-19 outcomes. Plausible mechanisms suggest OSA may independently increase the risk of death from COVID-19. The study also highlights the major impact of COVID-19 on the diagnosis and treatment of OSA.

Zelalem G. Dessie et al.

Summary: Chronic comorbidities, complications, and demographic factors such as acute kidney injury, COPD, diabetes, hypertension, CVD, cancer, increased D-dimer, male gender, older age, current smoker, and obesity are identified as clinical risk factors for fatal outcomes related to coronavirus mortality, according to large dataset from 42 studies involving 423,117 patients. The findings provide valuable insights for future research, control, and prevention of the disease.

Obstructive sleep apnea and COVID-19 clinical outcomes during hospitalization: a cohort study

Saif Mashaqi et al.

Summary: The study found that while there is a higher prevalence of OSA among patients with COVID-19, after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, and comorbid diseases, OSA does not appear to be an independent risk factor for worse COVID-19 outcomes in hospitalized patients. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to clarify the potential role of OSA in determining outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.
