Association Between Benzodiazepine or Z-Drug Prescriptions and Drug-Related Poisonings Among Patients Receiving Buprenorphine Maintenance: A Case-Crossover Analysis

Kevin Y. Xu et al.

Summary: Benzodiazepine or Z-drug treatment in patients with opioid use disorder is associated with an increased risk of nonfatal drug-related poisoning, which can be partially mitigated by buprenorphine treatment. Dose reduction of benzodiazepines or Z-drugs while maintaining buprenorphine treatment may lower the risk of drug-related poisoning.

The rise of illicit fentanyls, stimulants and the fourth wave of the opioid overdose crisis

Daniel Ciccarone

Summary: The review provides an update on the rising trend of illicit fentanyls, overdose risks, and treatment options, particularly focusing on the increasing use of synthetic opioids like fentanyl and its analogs in the US. Methamphetamine and cocaine-driven stimulant-related overdoses are also on the rise nationwide, contributing to the 'fourth wave' of high mortality involving these substances. The use of illicit fentanyls remains a major contributor to overdose deaths, and the increase in stimulant-related deaths seems to be connected to the ongoing opioid epidemic.

An examination between treatment type and treatment retention in persons with opioid and co-occurring alcohol use disorders

Carrie M. Mintz et al.

Summary: The presence of co-occurring alcohol dependence in individuals with opioid use disorder may decrease the likelihood of receiving medication treatment and impact the choice of treatment type. Buprenorphine and methadone are associated with higher treatment retention rates, but are not prescribed enough for individuals with opioid and alcohol dependence.

The fourth wave of the US opioid epidemic and its implications for the rural US: A federal perspective

Richard A. Jenkins

Summary: The current opioid epidemic in the United States has gone through three waves, now entering a fourth wave characterized as a stimulant/opioid epidemic with a greater presence of mental health co-morbidities. The use of stimulants has introduced new complexities in terms of behavioral consequences, available treatments, and engagement into services, compounding existing challenges in rural areas. Considerations for addressing this new wave are discussed, along with persistent concerns such as stigma in confronting drug abuse.

Pharmacotherapy for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Retention in Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Treatment: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Kristopher A. Kast et al.

Summary: This study found that outpatient SUD patients receiving ADHD pharmacotherapy showed better short- and longer-term retention compared to those not receiving medication. The results indicated that younger age, comorbid cocaine use, and private insurance were associated with clinical diagnosis of ADHD.
